Book Description

September 1, 2004
California architects Conrad Buff and Donald Hensman produced an impressive catalog of work over their long partnership, including a contribution to Art & Architecture magazine's Case Study House Program, celebrity homes, and Ronald Reagan's Governor's Mansion. Buff and Hensman's houses epitomized the increasingly casual lifestyle that revolutionized social habits across the United States in the 1960s. An almost perfect climate in and around Los Angeles made it possible for the architects to develop a wood-frame and glass-panel architecture that lends seamlessly with its surroundings. When California building code forced a change in their design methodology, they began a new phase of their creative life that reinvigorated their practice.
This book is the first comprehensive look at their achievement, and includes commentary on their most important projects as well as a complete chronology of all of their work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge Modernists Finally receiving much-deserved recognition, March 30, 2010

This review is from: Buff & Hensman (Hardcover)
This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend Pasadena Heritage's Spring Home Tour, devoted to Buff & Hensman: The Art of Modernism 1954-1999. The tour showcased six of the approximate 50 homes designed by the firm in the City of Pasadena. The book is a beautiful representation of the firm's design philosophy, balancing high art with "humanly proportioned spaces" and always with a connection to the site's natural surroundings. I'm a fan!

First Sentence:
Like many avant-garde members of their generation in and around Los Angeles, Buff & Hensman tried to oppose the stultifying introspection typical in prewar housing and accommodate the radical shift in lifestyle brought about by the end of World War II; a less formal, more casual approach demanding freedom and openness in living arrangements. Read the first page
