4.0 out of 5 stars "Primitive" (Antique) Recording Techniques, June 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Buffalo 66 (Audio CD)
Mr. Gallo is a collector of vintage microphones and so-called "primitive" recording tools (with which he uses some personal and unusual recording techniques). Although the Gallo's tracks might sound "dirty" as if they need to be "cleaned up" to some folks these are the warm, compressed, fuzzy tones of hot antique optothermoisolator tubes that VG is going for. It's really a very lovely, ethereal, almost crackling sound that is the complete antithesis of today's all-too-common icey-clear digital work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gallo proves himself the master of yet another art form., July 30, 1998
This review is from: Buffalo 66 (Audio CD)
Vincent Gallo is an undeniably talented New York hot shot. Former CK model, Mudd Club regular, painter, musician, rapper(don't ask), etc. The sountrack to his directorial debut, BUFFALO 66 proves him to have mastered yet another art form. The film itself is a brilliant debut in which Gallo stars along with Christina Ricci and heavyweights like Mickey Rourke, Anjelica Huston, Ben Gazzara, Jan- Michael Vincent and Rosanna Arquette. The soundtrack, Produced by Vincent Gallo, features 13 tracks, 8 of which he wrote, composed and performed. Most of his own compositions feature a jazzy, ethereal guitar - almost like Neil Young on downers, playing jazz plugged into some amp in a long wallway. Don't get me wrong - it's good, in fact, a couple of the tracks remind me of Peter Gabriel's Passion soundtrack, sort of spacy and oddly trance-like. The first track (Lonely Boy) features Gallo's pretty decent singing, and this, in addition to the 2 Yes songs (Heart Of The Sunrise, Sweetness) turn the soundtrack into a gem. Heart of the Sunrise is a better song than anything I've heard on the radio in years. Where was I during the prog-rock movement? Probably listening to Duran Duran. The packaging is absolutely gorgeous, probably because Vincent's face is on it a total of 10 times. But this first pressing is a "limited edition digi-pack with a full color 20 page booklet" blah blah blah. Vincent Gallo is a true talent, a true renaissance man, and a wonderful actor, writer, director, musician, artist - whatever he wants to be, at any given moment. Gallo is a man that obviously knows what he wants, and goes right out and gets it. That is the kind of man I want. This is the kind of sountrack I love. Buy it, see the film, and fall in love with Vincent Gallo

After reading Martin's post, I just got myself a used copy, problem solved. Onto the music: if you're on the fence about Vincent and not really sure, buy this. That was my situation, and this is a great "sampler". I like bands like NoMeansNo, Slayer, Minor Threat, you know - bands that can Kill It, and everyone was always telling me about Yes & Crimson but I was always like "maybe someday I'll get around to it". Well, this album helped that happen. I am so glad I got this. I'm a drummer & I've been playing along all day to "Heart of the Sunrise" on my practice pad. Vincent has a beautiful mind and I really appreciate that. Steve Albini useds vintage equipment, but most of his stuff just makes him sound like a connoisseur of analog tape hiss (Greyhound). Vincent uses this equipment in a much more emotional way. I "get it" way more than when others do it. I also love his voice - there is a BIG difference between Vincent's voice and John Frusciante's fake voice on the "Under the Bridge" backup vocals. John can consider that an artform, but for some reason I don't buy that. Vincent gets thru to me though. Thanx for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Movie, even Better Soundtrack!!, February 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Buffalo 66 (Audio CD)
This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, artsy yet proper for the film. Music is the very soul of every motion picture and Vincet Gallo's work on the Buffalo 66 soundtrack is as powerful as his acting in the film. The majority of the soundtrack's music has a very blue yet flowing quality to it that I have only seen since The Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack. If you enjoy staring at nature or just anything while listening to some simple music, then this album is for you. It's a shame more people don't like this album, I recommend everyone at least listen to the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars AS AMAZING AS THE MOVIE!, January 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Buffalo 66 (Audio CD)
This soundtrack is beautiful and touching in as many ways as the movie. Yes and Vincent Gallo go together as well as Ricci and Gallo in the film, kind of stained at first but unbelievably moving by the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars One a$$ kicking album!!!!!!, March 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Buffalo 66 (Audio CD)
OH MY!!!!! Vincent Gallo is a genious. The songs that he wrote are amazing. I mean come on this is a guy who played with Jean-Michel Basquiat. It's worth buying it just for that reason. Gallo is the type of guy that when you taste him you keep wanting more. He is a very talented man and i can't wait for him to release an album from his band Bunny(Lukas Has is a member). I could go on forever about how wonderful he is but I don't have enough room. I love Vinnie!(to bad he is 20 years older than me)
