Book Description

July 1, 2010

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was America’s first celebrity. He lived during a time of great geographic and technological expansion, a time when American mass media became dominant. Cody was there at every step, the right person at the right place at the right time. It was through those brilliant efforts that Cody the man became Buffalo Bill the celebrity and, eventually, Buffalo Bill the legend.

Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary stands apart from other historical tributes to Buffalo Bill’s life and times. Based upon the collection of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, this book provides a new perspective on William F. Cody through a detailed look at his personal effects and memorabilia from his larger-than-life shows.

Steve Friesen is the director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. Like Buffalo Bill, Friesen was raised in Kansas. He attended Bethel College in Newton, once characterized by Buffalo Bill as the wildest and wickedest town in the West. Friesen has a master’s degree in American folk culture from the State University of New York’s Cooperstown Graduate Program. He’s married to Monta Lee Dakin, whom he met at a national museum conference in Philadelphia. They married the following year and have two children.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Beyond all the hype and self-promotion generated by dime novels and his own Wild West shows, the truth remains that William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was the real thing. Born in Iowa in 1846 and raised in Kansas, Cody worked as a wagon driver, trapper, gold prospector, Pony Express rider, and pro-Union guerrilla fighter while still in his teens. In his twenties, his reputation grew as he served as a valued Army scout, Indian fighter, and, of course, as a buffalo hunter. Still, Cody’s lasting fame is the product of his creativity, showmanship, and organizational skills as the owner and star of the Wild West shows. Friesen, who is director of the Buffalo Bill Museum in Golden, Colorado, has written an excellent photo-biography of Cody that relies on numerous photos of artifacts from the musuem. Supported by well-written and incisive text, these images paint a vivid, often inspiring portrait of the man and the American frontier that shaped him. This is a tribute rather than a critical biography, so some scholars may blanch at Friesen’s non-stop admiration of Cody. However, it remains a useful and enjoyable chronicle of a life well lived. --Jay Freeman

More About the Author

Steve Friesen was born in Lawrence, Kansas and grew up in the small Kansas town of Buhler. He attended Bethel College, a Mennonite school in North Newton, Kansas, where he received a BA in History and Social Sciences with a minor in Peace Studies. In 1975 - 76 he attended the Cooperstown Graduate Program of SUNY Oneonta, receiving an MA in American Folk Culture. He has worked at various museums in Colorado, Kansas and Pennsylvania since 1976. His first book A Modest Mennonite Home was written while he was Director of the 1719 Hans Herr House. It explores 18th century Mennonite/Pennsylvania German history and culture. Following two years as Director of the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver, Friesen moved to the top of Lookout Mountain overlooking Denver. There became Director of the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, a position he has held since 1995. Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary is based upon research done by Friesen during the past fifteen years at the museum. In addition to writing and researching the book, he also did most of the artifact photography for the book, which includes 250 images of artifacts and historic photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb treasury and giftbook for Old West aficionados, July 10, 2010
This review is from: Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary (Paperback)
Illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs throughout (including many photos of Buffalo Bill's personal artifacts), Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary is a captivating, reader-friendly biography of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Buffalo Bill experienced a wealth of adventure on the American frontier, from buffalo hunts to involvement in American Indian clashes and conflicts over slavery. He established his legacy in American history and popular culture with his "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show, which he deliberately made as authentic as could be by hiring real cowboys and American Indians to perform for his worldwide audiences. A superb treasury and giftbook for Old West aficionados, Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary is highly recommended.
