5.0 out of 5 stars True Band, True Music, True Rock
The review below by Bob Shaffer is so misguided, please do not take it seriously. First, American Minor is obviously not alt-country, they are not marketed as such and do not claim to be, so do not listen to this album expecting this or you will be disappointed.

Secondly, to say that a band such as the Kings of Leon (who was a group of guys gathered by BMG,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm
Personally, I haven't seen them live. And I don't live in WV -- though it appears the previous two reviewers might be slightly (just slightly) biased -- so I can't judge this band on anything other than what I hear coming from my speakers. The John Mellencamp comparison is fair, to say the least. The "marketing" of this band looks identical to Kings of Leon (Strokes...

The review below by Bob Shaffer is so misguided, please do not take it seriously. First, American Minor is obviously not alt-country, they are not marketed as such and do not claim to be, so do not listen to this album expecting this or you will be disappointed.

Secondly, to say that a band such as the Kings of Leon (who was a group of guys gathered by BMG, given pre-written songs and put into tight clothes hoping to capitalize off of the Strokes fortune) is the real deal shows that the reviewer does not value the true musicianship of a fine rock and roll band who creates their own personal music straight from their experience growing up in West Virginia.

I have to agree with Zachary when he says you must go see them live. Having seen them live many times, I can say that their live shows are stellar. Bud, their lead guitarist, truly unleashes his abilities when he is live and always blows away the crowd. I don't know when they are touring again, but when they do, make every effort to get out and see them, you won't be disappointed.

If you're really looking for a comparison with other bands, think Bad Company and Big Star. If this reference doesn't help you, then get albums from these guys too!

I'd really like to hear more of American Minor when I'm listening to the radio. I bought their CD and thought it was really fantastic!! More people should know about American Minor so they, too, can enjoy great rock and roll like this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Stong for an Introductory EP, November 21, 2004

Can't say I hear any John Cougar Melloncamp or Kings of Leon in this EP....What I hear is a band aiming for the stars...like Guns & Roses and the Black Crowes before them...do they fall short of the greatness they are trying to achieve (the greatness of bands like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and the Beatles)? Yes...but the stick is much higher than the bar being raised by their contemporaries.

Full of great guitar work, great lyrics and melodies...this EP is much stronger than the EP's released by the Strokes, the Kings of Leon, and Jet before their debut records. It's refreshing to hear a band with no gimmick except great songwriting (and it's a shame that this is a gimmick in this day and age.) Where's the album?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great prelude to an album, January 13, 2005

The songs are well written, and vocals...impressive. Also, the accompanying musicians demonstrate a well coordinated effort. It seems since there beginning, they've traded a country, folkish sound with a more pungent rock sound. American Minor's new style appeals to a larger market, but I hope with there first album they will bring some mixture of both new and old.

5.0 out of 5 stars don't listen to a college kid that don't dig "the cougar", November 12, 2004
This review is from: The Buffalo Creek EP (Audio CD)
Obviously that guy doesn't have a clue about rock'n'roll...this e.p. is just a taste of the great things to come from this band.

The overated Kings of Leon and the Bottle Rokets wish they had the chops the Minor have. So in conclusion if you love rawk with no b.s. pick this disc up you will not regret it, also they don't take no mess live go see 'em!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm impressed..., November 26, 2004

When this band started off playing Uncle Tupelo-ish alt-country a couple years ago, I was instantly a fan of their talented musicianship, catchy songwriting and clever lyrics. When the band begin to progress into a more guitar-driven, high energy rock band, I was suspect and honestly not as into it as their more mellow earlier material. But then I began to listen more and more to the songs of this EP, and it's grown on me and really impressed me. The influences of The Rolling Stones, Skynard and other southern rock and rock'n'roll bands are obvious. The comparisons to Jet, Kings of Leon and others are expected. But there's more sincerity, talent and creative song/lyric writing coming from American Minor than other nu-rock bands in the foreground. The guitar work is heads above the rest. The lyrical content is much less shallow. And the music's more daring, and structured more like punk songs than rock songs, which helps set them apart. American Minor's songwriting will only naturally mature, and I expect great things from a full-length release on Jive. P.S. Jet is absolutely terrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, June 7, 2005
This review is from: The Buffalo Creek EP (Audio CD)
When I first heard this band while flipping through the radio one day I was instantly hooked and immediately went looking for their CD. American Minor has some clear influences from the Rolling Stones, but some southern rock roots shine in areas. The only complaint about this CD...its too short. However this is a CD that you will always enjoy through every repeated cycle.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Buffalo Creek EP (Audio CD)
I really appriciate their talent. If your looking for a record to rock out....then you should get it. Its about time a band makes it that actually writes their own songs and shows meaning through their lyrics. They have a true rock-n-roll sound. Can't wait for the album. P.S. Go see them live, great show.

I have this cd and was lucky enough to see them in concert live last week. They do a great show and the band has really great musicians. The cd is well worth twice the price

Personally, I haven't seen them live. The John Mellencamp comparison is fair, to say the least. The "marketing" of this band looks identical to Kings of Leon (Strokes rip-offs or not). But the real question is: is anyone listening closely? This band is good, but they're not great. Rock-n-roll revival, trad-rock, post-grunge, whatever you want to call it. You might enjoy this disc two or three times, but then it will wear thin. That's not a horrible criticism -- it's not like I'm threatening to slap their mothers or anything, so take it easy! -- it's just how I heard this disc. My opinion, and like everyone else, I'm entitled to it. Good luck on the next disc, guys. I hope it reflects the growth you're aiming for.
