I bought this to use with Time Machine on MAC Leopard.
Having read about other drives and their performance, I chose this as it was a nice compromise. The ones with Firewire 800 ports were a steep jump in price and I did not need this extra performance for my normal "home use".
Its very well built and "Made in Japan" which is always a plus when buying electronic items.
I have two macs - both have Firewire 400 as well as USB 2.0 ports, so this was a nice versatile choice.
It was easy to set up. Plugging into my new Intel iMac it mounted in a few seconds. It comes pre-formatted in FAT 32 and so can be used by Windows and macs out of the box.
Since Intel Macs and Time Machine need GUID formatting it was then a few quick clicks in Disk Utility to partition it and set it up properly.
It is quiet and cool to the touch: the aluminium sides dissipate the heat effectively without the need for a fan. The other nice thing is that it has auto-power off so the Hard Disk stops spinning when your computer sleeps or shuts down. This is a real bonus since it saves the life of the disc and conserved power.
I comes supplied with high quality USB and Firewire cables it comes supplied so its ready to use out of the box.
I would highly recommend this drive to anyone.

I bought this in a hurry as my notebook was dying fast. I did have to change the drive format to NTSF so all my files would load but no problem.
I was not able to use the ACRONIS disk imaging software and also couldn't use the enclosed MEMEO software either. So I just copied all the files I could on the Buffalo external drive and used it as a removable drive on my backup computer. No problems at all with that process. The drive has an on/off switch but isn't noisy at all when running. I just got my repaired notebook back so will try reinstalling the imaging software, at my leisure, now that the emergency is over. You are backing up YOUR computer aren't you?
