Good Price - Low Quality,

This review is from: Buffalo DriveStation JustStore 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive HD-CL1.0TU2N (Black) (Personal Computers)
At first it seemed to be a good product, but right out of the box it was ticking. IT eventually got worse until I couldn't use it- the computer denied me access to my stuff. I have returned it and waiting to get my money back. You get what you pay for - I should have known. I would have just formatted and tried again but I didn't want to have a hard drive that is unstable.

A bargain for a Terabyte HD with no frills,

It's this simple: there are only a few vendors making the actual hard drives, and all the brands in the market simply design a groovy box, put a drive in, hook it up to their (or the OEM'd) power supply, package it and hope to make a few bucks.Buffalo is a funny company: they seem to offer either really unusual stuff for fair prices or really ordinary stuff for very low prices. This is the latter. It's a 1Tb hard drive. It's USB 2.0, but not Firewire or other fast interface. It has an auto power sensor instead of an expensive, breakable switch (not necessarily a bad decision). It looks okay. Nobody is going to offer you a bribe to take it out to dinner when they see it on your desk, but they aren't going to say "ew," either. There is one NOT TOO BRIGHT green led on the front that tells you it's on or that it's accessing the disc. Simple. You get a wall wart (meh, another wall wart) and a 1/2M Light Duty USB cable. The packaging is environmentally groovy recycled form molded fiberboard that will degrade in a landfill in a blink. The manual is short and sweet. And it works just fine. Not the world's fastest drive, not the sexiest, doesn't have meters, bells or casino lights, but it works, about the size of a softcover dictionary. ONE Caveat: it MUST BE USED VERTICALLY. That is stressed in the owner lit, and the design makes it obvious. A killer dealio worth every penny. I'd buy another as a gift in a heartbeat: it's twice the storage per dollar of most any other brand.

This reviews supersedes a prior one that was posted a few days ago. It turns out that the drive is *just fine*. The ominous screeching noise was not coming from the drive, but rather from my speakers, that sit exactly next to the drive. Some computer bug is causing this otherwise *nasty* noise. It may have to do with the fact I switched to an HDMI display (so a bug related to HDMI audio out may be to blame).The drive itself is working just fine as I had reported (other than the noise that I thought previously was coming from the drive). I do not like the cheap plastic case, which is otherwise incredibly light. Also, the instructions state that the drive *must* stand vertically, but it's incredibly easy for the stand to fall on account of its flimsiness (and rubber feet are also very sketchy---in fact there are only 2, not 4 as should be expected). In any event, the drive is doing its job fine as a backup drive, and the price was right. 4 stars overall. 2115|R11J17A6TKX4H1;2115|R1ZCCI4BKJ53CG;2115|R1MQ9KC9ONY887;
