As good as I had expected and very easy to set up.

I tried running the latest LS-Updater firmware from the Buffalo website for this device but it would not update the firmware since it could not find the partitions.

Size Name: 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Update: Feb 17, 2014

This is an *important update*, so it's up-front. Other updates after the original review.

I have just updated my LinkStation 420 2TB to firmware version 1.31. This firmware adds new features since 1.21 released last summer. Here are some of the improvements with annotations in parentheses:

- The iTunes server now supports shared folders up to five levels deep. (Previously only 1)

- Added SSL certificate installation. (stops browser warning with SSL enabled)

- Sleep timer is now supported. (feature added)

- Direct Copy is now supported (this is to copy files to a folder on the LinkStation from a USB device like a camera, flash drive or card reader).

- Isochronous transfer-compatible devices are now supported by the USB device server. The USB 3.0 port on LS421DE models doesn't support it. (USB 3.0 is only on the diskless model.)

- APC SMT series UPSs now work without the Legacy Communications SmartSlot Card. The following models are supported: SMT500J,SMT750J, SMT1000J, SMT1500J, SMT2200J, SMT3000J, SMT1500RMJ2U (UPS Battery Backup support for orderly shutdown feature added. Will work with multiple LinkStations!!)

- The option to clear firmware update notifications is now available.

The update is available from the Buffalo tech web site downloads. My LinkStation did NOT detect the update in the user interface (!?!?!). The updater is a 200MB download in a zip file. When extracted the updater operated flawlessly. It found the LinkStation where the update applied and performed it taking between 5 and 10 minutes. The updater then looked for other LinkStations that might need firmware updated - a nice touch.

Size Name: Diskless Enclosure Verified Purchase
Let me first preface that i've been using Buffalo NASes since 2007 and I love them. I own a TeraStation Pro, a TeraStation Pro II, a LinkStation Pro Duo, and this LinkStation LS421e is my 4th. They keep getting better/faster/simpler & USUALLY more feature rich.

BE WARNED: Although the LinkStation 400 series is basically the new improved version of LinkStation Pro series, the LS400s actually have LESS FEATURES than the LS-Pros do (as of firmware 1.01-0.53), even though Buffalo's website leads you to believe that both series share the same "LinkStation NAS System" with the same features.

So far I've identified 4 features missing from the LS400s which are in the LS-Pros
1. Power Management / UPS Synchronization via USB - This is important if you have a long-term power outage and want your NAS to gracefully shutdown before the UPS battery runs out. Without this you risk a hard shutdown, and once the power returns your NAS will be offline for a day or more while it checks the RAID's consistency.
2. Sleep Timer - If you use the LinkStation for backups, this is a nice feature to have the NAS power up before the backup starts and shutdown a few hours later. It's not a critical feature, but it helps you save power.
3&4. HTTP Web Server w/ PHP support & MySQL Server - You can use this to host your own custom apps. This is great on the LS-Pros as I was able to decommission some old PCs by moving their apps over to the LinkStation. Since the LS400s have beefier processors, they'd be even better suited for this, but alas, the feature is missing.

My guess is that these regressions are due to the brand-new simpler UI on the LS400s. They probably didn't get around to building the UIs for those features yet in this early v1.

Size Name: Diskless Enclosure Verified Purchase
I've been shopping for another NAS server for several weeks now. After a bad experience with another NAS product (that was returned), I decided to give the Buffalo 421de a try. I ordered the diskless model since I had two 2TB disks left over from the previous NAS (see my MyDitto review for that sad story).

The NAS system is very compact and lightweight. There isn't much metal in the box - most of the case is lightweight plastic I installed the drives in the case and hooked it up to my network.

The unit initialized in a few minutes and the lights on the unit appeared to indicate that all things were go.
My first challenge was with the NAS Navigator application that came in the box - it was unable to detect the LS421 on the network. I suspected that my Symantic firewall was interfering so I turned it off temporarily. After turning off the firewall, the NAS Navigator was able to detect the LS421.

Unfortunately, the status of the box was "Emergency Mode", which indicated that a severe problem had been encountered. I suspect that I precipitated the problem by reusing the hard drives without initializing them first since they had some data/volumes on them from the previous NAS server.

I shut off the unit and removed the drives and reinitialized them with another computer, but this did not fix the "Emergency Mode" problem.

According to the documentation, the "Emergency Mode" problem could only be fixed by flashing new firmware onto the NAS. I obtained the zip file from the Buffalo web site and attempted to update the firmware with the LSUpdate utility. No luck. The firmware update failed with "Partition not found - update aborted" message.
