BUFFALO MEDICINE

Tension is running high in Big Sky country over the controversial slaughter of buffalo that wander outside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park and onto land where cattle graze. At the heart of the dispute is "brucellosis," a dangerous disease that could devastate the cattle industry-and be transmitted to humans.

Veterinarian Jed McCane is working on a new vaccine that could wipe out the disease. It never occurs to him that anyone could feel threatened by his research--until someone tries to kill him. The attack brings an unlikely ally into his life: an activist from Buffalo Nation, a group determined to stop the slaughter of America's last free-roaming bison. It also devastates Jed's world: who are his friends? Who are his enemies?

Why would anyone object to a vaccine that could wipe out brucellosis forever? Jed must find the answer before time runs out, for both the buffalo and the safety of the world's food supply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffalo Medicine for the Soul, October 18, 2004
This review is from: Buffalo Medicine (Paperback)
I couldn't put this book down, the best read I have had in years.

As a National Park Service Ranger, I was looking forward to reading this book, which promised to be a thriller based on real issues at Yellowstone National Park. Wow, was I not disappointed. April Christofferson has written an action packed suspense novel which is based on a very tragic reality, the annual slaughter of the bison of Yellowstone by the state of Montana and US federal agencies.

April's background as a veterinarian and a biotech lawyer is clearly obvious in her depiction of the situation at our nation's first National Park. If you like the novels of Robin Cook and Michael Creighton, I think you will like Buffalo Medicine.

The tension that drives this novel to an incredible conclusion will touch everyone concerned about the fate of our nation's wildlife and wild places. For environmentalists and animal activists it's a must read. If you are just a lover of a damn good romantic thriller, you will find this novel both satisfying and a call for action.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding, thought-provoking novel, June 7, 2007

The best books are those that are educational and entertaining at the same time. This is definitely one of those books!

I read Buffalo Medicine at the same time government officials were contemplating allowing the massacre of 300 Yellowstone buffalo. While April Christofferson is a fiction writer, she uses real facts and real locations in this book. Sometimes Buffalo Medicine was so realistic I found myself reading late into the night just to get a better understanding of the true Yellowstone drama and its likely outcome.

I'm not going to discuss the book's storyline, as you'll enjoy the plot twists more if you don't know what to expect. I just say this: If you're an environmentalists or a wildlife advocate, Buffalo Medicine will be your next favorite novel. And even if you don't have strong feelings about nature or animals, you'll still love this book. It's well written, unpredictable, and highly addictive.

I have been told this story is good, but with all the foul language in the beginning I gave it up. Maybe these people used this language but it certainly didn't add anything to the plot. All it did for me was make me stop reading.
