Book Description

August 8, 2008
In the summer of 1923 Grant Collins leaves his languishing career as a journalist and travels to Montana to interview Tornado Tom, the last living rider of the Pony Express. Tom invites Grant to stay at his Buffalo Rock Ranch, a sprawling enterprise which Tom has hewn from the Montana wilderness. As the summer unfolds, Tom tells Grant of his seventy year odyssey from a Spartan childhood among the Blackfeet Indians to his life of baronial comfort. At The Buffalo Rock, Grant experiences the mise-en-scene of Tom's life, as he reluctantly learns to ride, shoot and fight. It is love at first sight when Grant meets Dixie, Tom's great-niece who is also visiting from Saint Louis. Among stolen moments of romance, Grant chronicles the life and times of the erstwhile frontiersman. When Buck Horton, a ranch hand with a penchant for violence, disputes Grant's claim to the heart of Dixie, the young lovers soon find themselves galloping headlong on the hooves of hell into the jaws of a deadly triangle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffalo Rock, June 6, 2009
This review is from: The Buffalo Rock (A Novel) (Paperback)
What a wonderful ride through the days of the wild West. A very relaxing read. I really enjoyed how the author tied in real historical events with the travels of this Pony Express Rider. Being that I am familiar with the area where the events took place, I could almost feel myself traveling back in time. I would highly recommend this book for this Summer's reading list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buffalo Rock A Beautiful Ride!, February 13, 2009
This review is from: The Buffalo Rock (A Novel) (Paperback)
From the first page I was hooked. There are so many historical bits of trivia that the authour has put in it makes you really be able to feel as if you are there and understand the circumstances the characters are going through.

His way of using the early 20th century coliquisms of the period with out making it overdone or making it sound streotyical really adds to the flavour of the book and makes the characters truly unique and endearing.

It was interesting to read of the old west when there were no fences and no trains and a person had too truly live off the land.

It is written in a very reality based and thoughtful way as to preserve the old west as it truly was. This book is not filled with stereo typical movie type cowboys and Indians .The Indians are written of respectfully and treated in a fair and historicaly accurate way. The cowboys are including the hero of the story not without his prejudices and flaws but that only goes to make them more human and beleivable.

There are so many refrences to famous characters of that time it is almost a who's who of the old west. You will here about legends such as Wild bill Cody, Billy the Kid, and even pre presidenial Teddy (pronunced Teedy) Roosevelt.

I definately agree this would make a great minisereis because each chapter is just about it's own adventure and a movie would never do it justice.

The Characters are very endearing and beleivable and the dialouge is very easy to follow. Along with his despriptions of the landscape this is a beautiful ride through simpler times!

History in general:
This book has so much to offer I recomend this book for anybody who has an intrest in the old west or early american history!

Millitary History:
It is also an interesting read for millitary history buffs as it covers several famous battles of the era from the indian wars to the Civil War to the Spanish American War.

American history:
It is a good read to those who love to read aboutt he old west you will never find a more accurate potrayal of early Amercian living!

Adventure:
This book has so many exploits of raw human courage and tenacity!

Romance:
The love triangle between Dixie, Grant and Buck will keep you rooting for the good guy.

Humour:
Torando Tom's stories have so many little anticdotse that you will find yourself laughing out loud!

Hunters and hikers:
The descriptions of the vast sweeping landscapes and beutiful moantain ranges will make you want to go and exeplore this beautiful area.

Americana:
This is a book that truly shows what our great country was founded on and the deep pricnciples of honour and integrity that these simple folk lived and died by.

So much more:
This book review could be so much longer as this book offers soo much to soo many.
Don't let the price discourage you it is well worth the money I don't think you or someone you give it to would be disapointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Buffalo Rock, January 23, 2009
This review is from: The Buffalo Rock (A Novel) (Paperback)
From the first page I could not put this book down. The author draws you into the story as though you were right there at the Buffalo Rock. The colloquial language, colorful descriptions, poignant dialogue bring these characters to life. The book has action, history, humor and romance. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next novel by this author.
