Buffalo Rock,
By
This review is from: The Buffalo Rock (A Novel) (Paperback)
What a wonderful ride through the days of the wild West. A very relaxing read. I really enjoyed how the author tied in real historical events with the travels of this Pony Express Rider. Being that I am familiar with the area where the events took place, I could almost feel myself traveling back in time. I would highly recommend this book for this Summer's reading list.

Buffalo Rock A Beautiful Ride!,

This review is from: The Buffalo Rock (A Novel) (Paperback)
From the first page I was hooked. There are so many historical bits of trivia that the authour has put in it makes you really be able to feel as if you are there and understand the circumstances the characters are going through.
His way of using the early 20th century coliquisms of the period with out making it overdone or making it sound streotyical really adds to the flavour of the book and makes the characters truly unique and endearing. It was interesting to read of the old west when there were no fences and no trains and a person had too truly live off the land. It is written in a very reality based and thoughtful way as to preserve the old west as it truly was. This book is not filled with stereo typical movie type cowboys and Indians .The Indians are written of respectfully and treated in a fair and historicaly accurate way. The cowboys are including the hero of the story not without his prejudices and flaws but that only goes to make them more human and beleivable. There are so many refrences to famous characters of that time it is almost a who's who of the old west. You will here about legends such as Wild bill Cody, Billy the Kid, and even pre presidenial Teddy (pronunced Teedy) Roosevelt. I definately agree this would make a great minisereis because each chapter is just about it's own adventure and a movie would never do it justice. The Characters are very endearing and beleivable and the dialouge is very easy to follow. Along with his despriptions of the landscape this is a beautiful ride through simpler times! History in general: This book has so much to offer I recomend this book for anybody who has an intrest in the old west or early american history! Millitary History: It is also an interesting read for millitary history buffs as it covers several famous battles of the era from the indian wars to the Civil War to the Spanish American War. American history: It is a good read to those who love to read aboutt he old west you will never find a more accurate potrayal of early Amercian living! Adventure: This book has so many exploits of raw human courage and tenacity! Romance: The love triangle between Dixie, Grant and Buck will keep you rooting for the good guy. Humour: Torando Tom's stories have so many little anticdotse that you will find yourself laughing out loud! Hunters and hikers: The descriptions of the vast sweeping landscapes and beutiful moantain ranges will make you want to go and exeplore this beautiful area. Americana: This is a book that truly shows what our great country was founded on and the deep pricnciples of honour and integrity that these simple folk lived and died by. So much more: This book review could be so much longer as this book offers soo much to soo many. Don't let the price discourage you it is well worth the money I don't think you or someone you give it to would be disapointed! the authors website is at: [...] Chris

From the first page I could not put this book down. The author draws you into the story as though you were right there at the Buffalo Rock. The colloquial language, colorful descriptions, poignant dialogue bring these characters to life. The book has action, history, humor and romance. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next novel by this author.

My favorite read is the Western Historical fiction. Where the author takes facts or near facts and fleshes it out into a great believable story. Mr. Faulkner, certainally deserves the top review of this work of art. I couldn't stop reading the first time I picked it up, its was the best 'read' I have read in a while. I have read all of Terry C. Johnson's Western stories, and many others, over the years, Buffalo Rock got the award it so much deserves.. Thanks Gene

The Buffalo Rock (A Novel)
Although an avid reader, I have avoided westerns for a number of years, but this was a real treat. All of that meaningful history about our western past, replete with a myriad of famous (sometimes infamous) personalities, is creatively tied into a suspenseful and passionate story. This incipient and obviously well-read author has combined several fascinating events with a smattering of cohesive fiction - producing an award-winning novel... and it was his first publication. Wow, imagine what's to come!

Even though this book was a finalist in the 2009 Spur Awards for Best First Novel, when I received it, I did not think it would be a story I'd enjoy. However, from the first line, the author set the hook. I found myself turning the pages, unable to put it down. As the reader accompanies the big city reporter, Grant, on his travels to Montana to interview Tom, the old Pony Express rider, the reader is treated to colorful descriptions of the big sky country that makes one glad to be there.
Adventure seems to come naturally on Tom's immense Montana ranch. When Grant is smitten by Tom's niece, Dixie, the growing love between the two is woven into the story line in a seamless stream as Tom relates his tales of the old West. As much as I loved Grant, Tom and Dixie, it was easy to learn to dislike Buck Horton, the brutish ranch hand who has taken too much for granted when he assumes that he and Dixie are an item. The reader knows that it can't end well. The author gives us multi-faceted and unforgettable characters who are Tom's family, friends and business acquaintances. Each of them lends some thread to the tapestry as the reader is carried along to a world that will exist in the reader's reality when she or he closes the last page of the surprise ending. I may just read this book again.

Excellent Read,

You will not be disappointed. Whenever the main character, "Tornado" Tom Thomas, recalls a piece of his past for the reporter who is writing his biography, that story becomes a book-within-a-book. It was like reading a dozen books at one time. And each one was equally enjoyable. Plus, the ending blew my mind. Kind of leaves you with the "WOW" factor.

I just finished reading Bob Faulkner's book The Buffalo Rock. It's really an outstanding novel. It holds your interest all the way through. Once I got into it I didn't want to put it down. For those that enjoy history, it has a lot of very interesting facts that obviously took a lot of research. I highly recommend this book and kudos to Bob on his first novel. I'm looking forward to any future novels from Bob Faulkner.

" The Buffalo Rock" provided me with many hours of entertainment. The mental pictures provided by the Author always made me feel as though I were there. The tails described by Tom were 100% believable making me wonder what was historic and what was fiction. The way Bob Faulkner moved from the story to the tales was seamless, never leaving the reader confused as to past or present in the story. I immediately identified with Grant, so awe struck by Tom's tales I sometimes forgot that Grant was left in the wild in the first chapter while Tom went for help. I found Social and Political overtones woven in the fabric of the book, but never enough to overshadow the enjoyment of a good story. Thanks to Bob Faulkner. Please give us another.
