well told, well illustrated,

This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers: The Story of Emanuel Stance (Hardcover)
This biography combines wild west visuals (open range, Indian warriors, galloping horses) with clear and easy-to-read text. It's a great book for children who are past step readers and ready for a reading adventure, but it is not too overwhelming. The illustrations are giant, taking your reader's eyes straight into the action. The text gets a little bit "folksy" but not too objectionable. It is WONDERFUL to read biographies of active, exciting young men - pro-learning, pro-leadership.. even pro-military. Boys surely need more books like this. Early grades can manage the text, but the story is interesting enough to hold the attention of older children (and parents!) as well. |
