Do NOT Watch This with Children,
By
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers (DVD)
This is a great movie about the struggles of early Black Americans and a virtually unknown chapter of their history. Danny Glover did a wonderful job portraying an Army officer at the time - a great leader to his men, even while being forced to be submissive to equal and higher ranking white officers.
We were excited about the G rating and the opportunity to share this movie with our family ages 2-11, but were shocked when not too far into it we were blasted with language, hangings (of children nonetheless), torture, and other acts of violence. We turned it off and finished watching it later after the kids were in bed, only to discover more of the same, as well as four nude men covered in blood. The G rating is absolutely incorrect. PG would be pushing it, PG-13 more likely. I can't believe they hit that so far from the mark. I definitely see the value in teaching children about history, but if you're going to make a movie for children to watch, the content should be on a child's level. Given the rating I have to question who's agenda got the G through. I can imagine a teacher informing parents the students will be watching this great G rated movie, IF they are even required to inform parents with the low movie rating. Makes me sick. I also thought it interesting that the other two reviews that mentioned rating had low customer marks. Go to netflix for more accurate reviews.

A Hollywierd production on Buffalo Soldiers,
By
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers (DVD)
This movie is very sad. Seminole Negro Indian Scouts only served in Texas, not New Mexico. There are no officers present but Colonel Grierson, only the sergeant major. Grierson is presented as a wimp when he was in reality a hero of both the Civil War and western frontier. No american soldiers would have been able to sneak up on the Apache. No black soldiers ever had to dismount to pass through a western town, this is purely Hollywood. The song that is sung by the black troopers as they are carrying one of there deceased to the cemetary was written in the 1930s. This is one sad movie.

The 'real' Buffalo Soldiers,
By
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers (DVD)
Been trying to find this movie locally (NZ) for ages, there are several DVDs/movies with this title, and I'd seen this once on local TV ages ago. I was not disappointed on arrival of Mr Danny Glover playing the part of a coloured sergeant in a platoon of other coloured soldiers in the US Cavalry fighting the Apache. With all the usual prejudices prominent this platoon does its job. Excellent movie watched it several times already, still as good as I had remembered.
