4.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT Watch This with Children
This is a great movie about the struggles of early Black Americans and a virtually unknown chapter of their history. Danny Glover did a wonderful job portraying an Army officer at the time - a great leader to his men, even while being forced to be submissive to equal and higher ranking white officers.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Hollywierd production on Buffalo Soldiers
This movie is very sad. Seminole Negro Indian Scouts only served in Texas, not New Mexico. There are no officers present but Colonel Grierson, only the sergeant major. Grierson is presented as a wimp when he was in reality a hero of both the Civil War and western frontier. No american soldiers would have been able to sneak up on the Apache. 4.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT Watch This with Children, January 1, 2009

This is a great movie about the struggles of early Black Americans and a virtually unknown chapter of their history. Danny Glover did a wonderful job portraying an Army officer at the time - a great leader to his men, even while being forced to be submissive to equal and higher ranking white officers.

We were excited about the G rating and the opportunity to share this movie with our family ages 2-11, but were shocked when not too far into it we were blasted with language, hangings (of children nonetheless), torture, and other acts of violence. We turned it off and finished watching it later after the kids were in bed, only to discover more of the same, as well as four nude men covered in blood. The G rating is absolutely incorrect. PG would be pushing it, PG-13 more likely. I can't believe they hit that so far from the mark.

I definitely see the value in teaching children about history, but if you're going to make a movie for children to watch, the content should be on a child's level. Given the rating I have to question who's agenda got the G through. I can imagine a teacher informing parents the students will be watching this great G rated movie, IF they are even required to inform parents with the low movie rating. Makes me sick. I also thought it interesting that the other two reviews that mentioned rating had low customer marks. Go to netflix for more accurate reviews.

Grierson is presented as a wimp when he was in reality a hero of both the Civil War and western frontier. No american soldiers would have been able to sneak up on the Apache. No black soldiers ever had to dismount to pass through a western town, this is purely Hollywood. The song that is sung by the black troopers as they are carrying one of there deceased to the cemetary was written in the 1930s. This is one sad movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'real' Buffalo Soldiers, October 30, 2007
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers (DVD)
Been trying to find this movie locally (NZ) for ages, there are several DVDs/movies with this title, and I'd seen this once on local TV ages ago. I was not disappointed on arrival of Mr Danny Glover playing the part of a coloured sergeant in a platoon of other coloured soldiers in the US Cavalry fighting the Apache. With all the usual prejudices prominent this platoon does its job. Excellent movie watched it several times already, still as good as I had remembered.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ignored chapter of American History..., May 5, 2002
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This commendable film addresses a shamefully ignored chapter of U.S. history. Freed slaves were enlisted in the military to patrol Western territories. Many served with distinction, as the narrative here takes pains to point out. Thankfully, the film is not unduly preachy, and it is very well acted. But it remains a bit sketchy and is dramatically a bit on the limp side. Well worth watching, but it could have been better developed and edited.

Great movie and was so when TNT did it for TV. Danny Glover was very good in this part and since I was, and am now a life memeber of the 1st Cavalry Division, I know a lot about the 9th and 10th Cav units who were the Buffalo Soldiers. I mysef served with the Delta Co. 2nd Bat 8th Cav Rgt Abn 1st Air Cavalry Div. Vietnam 68/69, so I love everything Cav, including all the John Wayne Cav movies. We have a steep tradition in the Cav, that goes very deep! God Bless the CAV!!! Nick Donvito.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overall movie, January 9, 2011

As an African-American I am interested in movies about Black history, Black culture, and life during slavery and historical black events.
As a result I purchased about a dozen DVDs on various subject matter which I am just now getting around to viewing.
I had heard about Buffalo soldiers but was not aware of the kind of role they played in history.
This DVD gave me more insight into who they were, what kind of role they played in settling the West and a general background on how they fared with their white counterparts coming after the civil war.
A good overall movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Buffalo Soldiers Danny Glover, January 3, 2007

This is a superb film, giving the viewer a great story of a little known period of American history. The battle/skirmish scenes with the Apache were well done and very realistic. I did not let the automobile approaching in the distance in one of the scenes at Fort Craig put me off either.Glad I bought this DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of a little known historical event, February 18, 2008
This review is from: Buffalo Soldiers (DVD)
As a teacher of Tx History, I find this movie to be helpful in dealing with a little known, and politically and socially sensitive topic. It is the story of the black men who joind the US military following the Civil War, and were stationed on the western frontier to take care of the Native problem. The movie explores the confrontation between these two persecuted minority groups, depicting both groups as men of dignity and honor. Reccommended for general history buffs, and those who are interested in black history.

The Col. Grierson portrayed in this movie is the same Col. Grierson portrayed by John Wayne in the Horse Soldiers.
