This review is from: Buffalo Technology TeraStation Duo 4 TB (2 x 2 TB) Network Attached Storage TS-WX4.0TL/R1 (Personal Computers)
This is my third NAS drive in about as many years, the Terastation is replacing a Synology DS207+ and makes a much more solid impression. I liked the features such as dual Ethernet ports and hot-swap capability and the generally more business oriented design over the Synology's jack of all trades approach, as I am mostly storing files and I want reliable access from 3-4 machines, nothing fancy. While the TS runs well (for about a month now) I find the setup confusing and the manual unclear. Just turning it on and off is different from what I am used to, especially since the unit isn't powered down often. On the other hand, when running it does its job without much intervention. It's even backing itself up on two USB drives hooked up to it and sends me an email when the jobs are complete, but it beats me why the jobs are referred to be a name in the setup while the email uses only job numbers identified nowhere. If you like a heavier duty NAS drive, this seems to be a good choice, but be prepared to fuddle with it for a while.

This Tera Station is all what you need to start your own Network Shared Space in a flash. Yes in a flash and no headache, no guessing. Also for anyone who is looking to share sensible documents, or files over an FTP by having his own secure FTP behind his network, again that's the unit to buy. Actually we just ordered another unit.... Highly recommended. P.S.: Product was delivered timely as expected and box in a perfect condition.

With the newest OSX from Apple, the firmware won't work for OSX features such as Time Machine, which is the sole reason I purchased this product. I have checked their website, and they make mentions of the firmware to be updated back in June, with a planned release of August, and I also emailed them a question asking about the status, never getting a response back. Also, the "NASNavigator" software that it had installed on my mac has never once found the drive while viewing it on the local network. Though that may be because of the OSX issue above. As such, I turned the drive to be on all the time rather than to go into sleep mode (which would happen often [while I'm using it!] with NasNavi not seeing the drive) I have already transferred my music over to it, regardless, as I planned to use it beyond Time Machine as a NAS, as it should be, with a single common library for my iTunes. It was easy to set up, and simple to use. I'm glad I have it.

This is my 3rd Tera Station. The most positive aspect of owning a Buffalo product is 24/7 technical assistance with English speaking technicians. This is extremely important to me and is the single reason I remain with Buffalo despite some shortcomings. The main shortcoming is the product manual. It is not up to date and some sections are not sufficiently complete to explain how to perform certain functions that the Tera-Station is capable of performing. Further the manual was written by someone who does not understand English grammar and vocabulary. Thus, it can be confusing. Another area that is slightly disappointing is data retrieval speed. However, these units seem robust. I have not had to replace any hard drives. These units have given me no trouble. They can send out status reports via email on a daily basis. Each unit has 2 x 1TB drives in RAID configuration. One is at my residence, Two are at the office. The 2nd unit at the office is set to "replicate". Essentially, it is plugged into the 2nd LAN port of the 1st unit. Any information written to the 1st unit is automatically written to the 2nd unit. That means I have 4 x 1 TB drives in the office all containing the same data. If the 1st unit fails for any reason, I simply plug the LAN into the 2nd unit and continue to operate. The unit at my home has all the office data backed up on it via SFTP (secure file transfer protocol). In this fashion, if the office burns down, once again, I can still be operational and have all my data. These units are small enough that in the even of a hurricane, you can take one or more entire units with you when departing town. I do not think any NAS would completely satisfy me. Given my penchant for excellence and perfection, I award 4 stars to this specific NAS made by Buffalo Technology.

Terrible customer service,

We purchased a TeraStation Pro and it worked well for about a year, but then one of the HDDs failed. I called them after troubleshooting the problem and was informed that I had to pay for shipping as well as provide a credit card and proof of purchase before they would send me a new HDD. I was on the phone and issued 3 RMA numbers before they would consider shipping. Now our employees cannot access their data for over a week. I have dealt with HP and Dell in the past with failed HDDs and got a prompt response and they sent the part next day at no additional cost. I will never consider purchasing Buffalo again.

A product that works as advertised. You cant ask for more - for the $ you pay for this. I bought a set mainly for replication and it works just fine. Just get it, you wont regret it.
