4.0 out of 5 stars The show might be over but the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" calendar could go on forever, December 31, 2006
This review is from: Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2007 Wall Calendar (Calendar)
At one point I had three calendars up on my bulletin board, namely my "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" calendar in the middle flanked by the "Angel" and Spike calendars. But now here we are on the eve of 2007 and fans of the Whedon universe are down to just the "BtVS" calendar, which is probably as it should be. However, I do have to wonder how long we will be able to keep picking up a new "BtVS" calendar each year. I would like to think that Buffy is in for the long haul as a cultural icon, given all of the academic treatises on the series lining my shelf and the fact that Joss Whedon is writing a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comic book that will deal with the 8th season of the show that ended after seven seasons in 2003.

Those who lament the absence of the Angel and Spike will be happy to know that each gets their own month in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2007 Wall Calendar" (August and February respectively). Willow, Xander, Giles, Dawn, Anya, and Tara are each highlighted with their own months, while there are a couple of months devoted to the Scoobies. Buffy gets two months to herself, although the second time around two of the three photographs are actually of the Buffybot (head on and head off). The motif for each month is to have one larger and two smaller photographs. Most of the large photographs are familiar shots for Buffy fans (i.e., I have them as 8 x 10s with the "BtVS" logo on them), but there is at least one new photograph from my perspective on each page, and those are some of the most interesting ones, from a dramatic shot of Faith and the Mayor to the candid shot of Willow sticking her tongue out the camera. That is one of several shots from "The Gift," and there also a couple from "Seeing Red"/"Villains," along with a lovely shot of Willow and Tara looking at each other.

My minor complaint is that on the cover Sarah Michelle Gellar is not wearing enough eye makeup, so that she does not really look like herself (not that I know such things, but usually she has more eyeliner or whatever). The bottom of each spread has the calendar part of each month along with a quote from the featured person. The calendars include the standard information regarding phases of the moon, start of each season, and holidays, both religious and national (US, Canada and UK). So your "Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2007 Wall Calendar" is quite functional as a calendar on which you could write things, but I have never gone that route. Finally, I would resolve to turn the pages of my "BtVS" calendar on the first day of each month, but I never have managed to do that in the past and it is not going to happen this year either and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

4.0 out of 5 stars BTVS calendars still going strong, January 17, 2007

In the past, the Buffy calendars usually alternated the attention with Buffy on the odd-numbered months and the rest of the Scoobs receiving their own even-numbered month. In 2007, the Buffster only takes two months while a greater list of characters are featured in the other ten. If you're big on Sarah Gellar, it'll be a long drought between January and July.

One nit: A pic is used twice (just cropped differently) on Buffy's first and Giles' solo page. But the high quality of the photos and of the calendar design and materials is as good as ever.

I love the 2008 Buffy Calendar! All of the pictures are very good. My favorite part is that Cordelia finally has a month of her own! I feel she's not recognized as much as she should be. I guess most people associate her with Angel, but thats no reason for her to be absent from so many Buffy products.

It's deffinetly worth buying.
