This review is from: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 2009 Wall Calendar (Calendar)
This is your standard, typical monthly calendar -- and it's nicely done considering it's about a series that has been off the air for five years. Each month has a theme -- which is usually character- or theme-driven -- that helps pull it all together.
But this calendar has a real and discernible "ick" factor that I really, really, really hope was unintentional. The photographic theme for January appears to have been "Buffy's Lovers," as there are individual photos of Buffy with Riley, Spike, and Angel, respectively. But for reasons I can't possibly understand, the calendar uses a still of Buffy and Spike from the season six scene in which he attempts to rape her; in point of fact, the specific shot shows Spike pinning Buffy to the ground with his hands clutching at her chest as she clearly cries out in anger and terror in her bathroom. I'm all about the Spuffy, but I don't want photographic evidence of a cinematic storyline that highlights an attempted rape hanging on my wall for 31 consecutive days. I was surprised -- and pleased -- to receive this calendar as a Christmas gift. But I won't be hanging it up until February. And I hope the editor(s) of the 2010 calendar will be more aware.

This would be an excellent calendar, except that on the very first month you are treated to a picture of Spike trying to rape Buffy. How in the world did that make it out of the planning room? Who thought... let's use this picture, it was a happy scene. Or worse yet, who thought we were naive enough to not recognize one of the most horrific scenes from the seven seasons of Buffy put together. A poor choice.

If you have the 2009 calendar, you've pretty much seen the 2010, right down to the font. Each month has a large photo with three smaller inset photos. Here's the layout: January is Buffy, Feb is Xander with two vamp Xander pics that are too similar, Mar is Giles, April is Tara, May is Cordy - and the photo doesn't especially reflect the character, June is Anya with Xander because apparently a 1000 year old ex demon doesn't warrant her own month, July is Angel with Buffy, Aug is Spike (who gets his own large photo without Buffy), September is the core cast from the early seasons, Oct is the girls, November is Willow, and December is Dawn with no other characters and therefore a huge letdown. Riley Finn doesn't appear anywhere in the calendar although Adam does, so Marc Blucas fans will be disappointed. There is one inset of Kendra but no pictures of Faith. No Robin Wood. No Glory. No final fight nor any potentials at all. Overall it looks like someone picked a bunch of mostly early photos and made a calendar. It does not appear that person had a great appreciation for nor an understanding of the show. If you can find a better Buffy calendar, go with that one. If not, this is an ok substitute.

Okay, but very similar to 2009,

The Spike image from the 2010 calendar is the exact same image as in the 2009 calendar, only with different inset images and a different border color. That's really my only complaint with this 2010 edition. Still, the insets and main pictures are good picks. We get to see all the main characters, although Anya (my favorite character) doesn't get her own month--she shares one with Xander.
Besides that, this calendar is okay. It follows the exact same pattern of the 2009 edition, with mostly different pictures used (both for the main images and the inset images). The variation with the insets isn't always the best, though. For example, in February (Xander) 2 of the insert images feature vamp Xander and Willow from the episode "The Wish". Two of the insets for July (Angel) feature Angellus in his period wig and clothes. Spike's month (August) has an insert featuring he and Buffy getting it on in the episode "Smashed", with full on "O" face. Overall, I'm disappointed that the design isn't very different than last years, but the image choices were delightful.

I printed a photo of Buffy & Spike from "Something Blue" and pasted it over the offensive photo. It turned out so well, I'm going to re-edit some of the other months i.e. a shot of Spike with Drusilla to replace the one where his blood opens the seal and a photo of Darla for Angel's month.

Arrived on time and in good shape. Nostalgic as always! Fine pictures reminiscent of a great TV series with original stories and characters.

Considering the show has been off for a few years this calendar is nicely done. Each month features a large promo picture of a character and underneath the large pic are 3 smaller pictures with scenes from the show. I miss Buffy so I love having this calendar as a reminder to what a great show it was. Shipping was fast. Thanks

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. A good representation of the show's characters - like the big pictures with the smaller insets around them. Each big picture, however, is like a headshot or publicity still - would have been more fun if they were screen shots from the show.

Have you ever noticed that the promo photo shoots for buffy always make the characters "cartoony" and sometimes they look more tan than they do on the tv show, i always felt these photos are pics of the actors, not the characters...ANYWAY, i love me some buffy, im just upset that ANYA doesnt get her own month... I am a 100% anya fan, she was a staple snoopy in the latter half of the show, and often times was the only one who would speak the truth when no one else would! I mean, come on!! TARA gets her own month!?.... TAARA!!!???!!! UHG! |
