Midway through Season 8 I had thought this experiment may not succeed, December 22, 2011
This review is from: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 8: Last Gleaming (Paperback)
I was wrong. They seemed to work their way through some storylines that felt a bit odd to find a thrilling, satisfying conclusion that made me feel as if I was watching the show again - exactly what I wanted from the comic book series. Sure there are things that occur in the comics that originally felt out of place in the Buffyverse, but when you have an unlimited canvas for creativity, why not use it.
If you are a Buffy fan stick it through the rough patches the Season 8 storyline finds and keeps its stride.

Those fearing that they might be lost by jumping into the Demon Infested Finale of Season Eight need not Fear, for Buffy, Spike, Angel are back together again in a story arc that could only be attributed to the inimitable style of Joss Whedon. Back but not nearly alone, they have brought along just about darn near every main character from seasons past to season this Chef's Surprise, which Francis Scott Key would surely have made allowances and overtures by lending this firework laden flag waving finale to this titles "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Volume 8: Last Gleaming".
Demonic Threats from Beyond, Bugs flown Steampunk Spaceship Death from Above, Big Betrayals from Within, all to be faced and defaced in a race where it all leads back to Sunnyvale and the elusive "Seed of Wonder".
Wiccans and Slayers and Demons, oh My! Oh Oh My indeed, best lest not to forget the Gods on High, for all have age old agendas, and someones got to Die!
Read it yourself if you think my tongue could Lie!!
Get in Line for Season Nine!

Moments of brilliance but still a big mess, September 18, 2011
This review is from: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 8: Last Gleaming (Paperback)
After 8 volumes and 1000 pages of story Buffy's 8th season finally lurches to a close with this book.
Nearly all the major characters from the original series play a role and there is the obligatory death. There's some good scenes and occasionally snappy dialogue. But the story is still a big mess.
Things happen for no real reason, except maybe because it would be cool. Everything just seems half-baked and half explained. Which is not too surprising since Jos Whedon is occupied by other projects and surely cannot give this his full attention.
Whedon seems to understand this and in an unusual afterword explains that Season 9 will be more down to Earth and more of a return to the spirit of the show.
It was a fun ride and this is a decent enough conclusion, but in the end it's still a mess.
