"Buford could be the new Rudolph (and Bill Peet couldn't be better)." Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

"At some point," Bill Peet once said, "it occurred to me that drawing was something I couldn’t possibly give up, and somehow it must be turned into a profession." He went on to not only fulfill his dream but to introduce generations of young readers to his delightful vision of humor, friendship and compassion.

This book was my husband's favorite book in the 60s when he was in elementary school. Now we read it to our children, along with many other Bill Peet books. We love the illustrations, plots and rhymes in Bill Peet's books. Buford is a sweet and innocent mountain goat dealing with a handicapping condition (oversized curling horns) that threatens his safety. Then when he's cornered he discovers a way to use his horns not only to escape the hunters, but to ski. And everyone at the ski resort loves him and makes him welcome. If you like this one, try Eli, Cowardly Clyde, and The Wump World.

These are my absolute favorite pictures from Bill Peet. Buford has trouble with his tribe due to being smaller than the other bighorns, but manages to find a way to be proud in spite of the opinions of others.

We love everything by Bill Peet. The story of Buford is particularly touching. It teaches children that even apparent weaknesses can be a blessing if we try our best, that we can overcome them, and that people can love us despite them. This story was an old favorite of ours and I was very happy to find it and purchase it. Even if my children have outgrown it they still love to go back and re-read it from time to time.

Bill Peet was one of our favorite children's authors. For those who don't know, he was also famous for a number of Disney screenplays, such as Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood and others. We own about 30 of his books now, and are grateful to have them.

This book was a favorite of my brother-in-law's so I bought it on his recommendation. My kids loved it!

I thought it would be too long for my younger ones, but they enjoyed the pictures, and the action keeps everyone involved.

I even took this book to read to my son's first grade class. The students paid attention the whole time I was reading. At the end they wanted to ask questions and talk about sweet Buford.

It has a great message of helping others, putting others first, and looking on the bright side of things. What Buford thought of as an affliction turned out to be of great benefit (and fun!).

Bill Peet has been a family favorite author since 1978. I read them to my son in the 70's. Bought every one I could find for my grandchildren, and now am purchasing for that same son's newly arrived twin boys. I recently asked my first three grandchildren if they still had their Bill Peet books and discovered that they plan to NEVER (said emphatically) get rid of them. In addition, they are still read because they take them on babysitting jobs to read to their charges who also LOVE them.

I loved Bill Peet books as a child, and I still really like them today. I recently bought the whole set so that my children will have them, and realized that I remember every character and every plot from 20+ years ago when my parents read them to me. They really made an impact on me. The illustrations are cute and captivating, the characters are engaging, the stories and well told, and each book has a meaning. There are few authors who can create such a fine balance in childrens' books.

If you haven't discovered Bill Peet yet, you're really missing out. Someone recommended this book to me. The rhyming has a nice flow. Great vocabulary experience. Fun art by Mr. Peet who worked for Disney. My most wiggly, sometimes moody 2nd grade grandson read all the way thru, never lost interest and we both laughed. What more can you ask for?
