From School Library Journal
Grade 3-4?Third-grader Charlie Kaplan, or Bug Boy, has a passion for every kind of insect. So when a Bug-A-View mysteriously arrives at his house, he can't resist switching it on. His pet arachnid, Spidey, crawls into the bright light. Charlie peers into the machine and when he forces his eyes open, he sees the room from an insect's point of view. In a cleverly written text, differentiated by bold print, Sonenklar describes Charlie's moves and views as Spidey. He accidentally changes into a grasshopper, then purposely into a fly so he can bug Raymond, the class brownnoser and tattletale. An episode involving Charlie's entomologist friend, Heidi, and the bombardier beetle she takes to the school's Insect Fair results in near disaster, but all works out well. Facts about insects are seamlessly integrated into the lively narrative. The black-ink sketches add interest to the breezy story line. For a winning duo, pair this title with E. A. Hass's Incognito Mosquito, Private Insective (Lothrop, 1982), a story of a bug with a human point of view.?Christina Dorr, Calcium Primary School, NY

Gr. 3^-6. Known to his friends as Bug Boy, Charlie has an appreciation for bugs that few of his classmates share. Much to his disappointment, even his best buddy, Suzanne, has lately begun hanging out with the "all-bugs-are-gross-and-disgusting" girls. But when someone sends Charlie a Bug-a-View, which mysteriously promises to give you a bug's-eye view of the world, life gets a whole lot more interesting. Charlie's adventures as he turns into a variety of bugs make for a fast-paced, funny read. Short, action-packed chapters with different typefaces depending on whether Charlie is bug or boy will entice reluctant readers, while the book will have special appeal to the many children who have taken a topic like bugs, baseball, or ballet to their hearts.
