If one thing can be learn about Hurricane Sandy is this, anything can happen at any time. For those people who think that an "end of days" scenario couldn't happen, well, I have plenty of friends on the Jersey Shore that will differ with you on that point.

I have seen so many disasters in the news in the last year that I have been thinking that at the very least, I need to have something ready for me and my family. I mean, how much does it really take to get ready and be prepared for a disaster, especially if you are planning in advance?

I remember as a small child we had these ice storms here in Texas during the winter months that would knock out the power for up to a week and shut the roads down. Now imagine no power which means no heat when it is below freezing. But it seems that my parents and grandparents were always prepared for these ice storms since they came every year. There was plenty of food, candles, oil lamps, gas stoves for heat, etc. It seemed that everything that was needed was on hand.

Now, with today, if we were to get hit with one of those storms, to put it gently, we would be screwed big time like the folks in Orleans back in 04. I guess people don't think about these things anymore. But what I do know is I want to be of the side of being ready for whatever might come.

That is why I bought this book. Sasha has done a great job in putting together a comprehensive book of the basic necessities that takes up no room and more importantly, will last you at least 3 days. Not only does she give you the information of what to have on hand, she lays out strategies on what to do if "it" hits. I was impressed with the in-depth information on water purification as it offers different methods to purify water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for putting together a great bug-out bag February 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this e-book free from the author, in exchange for writing an honest review for it. I was especially interested in it because self-sufficiency is a subject I'm interested in.

Whether you call it a BOB, a 72-hour kit or an emergency pack, having a well stocked bag that you can live out of is important. During widespread emergencies, the police, First Responders and hospitals will be overwhelmed with caring for thousands of people. Having prepared a bag for each person in your family, you will be that many fewer people waiting helplessly for assistance. Even if the emergency just affects your family (like a house fire or gas leak), being able to quickly evacuate from a dangerous situation might mean the difference between life and death for you and your loved ones.

Sasha Fields has done a wonderful job covering the basics for putting together a useful and possibly lifesaving BOB. She covers the various options for choosing a bag and deciding how to bug-out, and then goes on to cover ways to plan for water, food, shelter and fire, first aid, communications, defense, navigation, hygiene/health, packing for infants and pets, and more.

Each member of our family has a BOB that is appropriate for their age and size, and reading through this book reminded me that I need to change out the seasonal clothes and check the sizes I've packed for our growing kids. We live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, tornadoes and even earthquakes, so it gives me peace of mind knowing we are ready to leave at any time. One main difference we have with the author's advice is that each of our BOBs is basically complete for each person (and labeled with their initial).

This is good for beginners, but probably not what you would really want for a more advanced user. Comprehensive coverage of what you need to get going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Survival Kit Guide December 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, I started thinking about what I could do to prepare myself for a natural disaster. I was glad when I stumbled upon this book. The author breaks everything down for you---how to create a sufficient enough survival kit to survive in the event of a natural disaster.

The author, Sasha Fields, talks about the type of bag to get, which he refers to as the Bug-Out-Bag. He even describes the different types of water bottles, supplies, tools, clothes and food to buy to store in your survival bag. This book is full of useful information that will help you be prepared for any occasion. I highly recommend it.
