Not what I expected,
This review is from: Bugaloos (Audio CD)
If you are as familiar with the songs from the Bugaloos TV series as I am, you may be somewhat disappointed with this CD. The versions of the songs are not the same as on the episodes. There is different production, instrumentation, and mixing, including on the vocal tracks. While the essence of the songs is the same (and I do enjoy them), I would have preferred to have a CD with the songs as they were heard on the show.

Great nostalgia... and superior sound!,
This review is from: Bugaloos (Audio CD)
Okay, so the import fee is steep, but this "Bugaloos" album is REMASTERED (clearly from the original tapes), unlike the Sid & Marty Krofft compilation CD available here in the USA. If you're a fan of the Bugaloos TV show, and you're looking for superior sound quality, this import price is completely justified. I wish the Krofft compilation CD had taken the same amount of time and care in the handling of the material as this Japanese import did. Very well done! Compare the shared Bugaloos tracks side by side and there's no contest! Buy this Import CD. Oh... and I dig the songs too! It reminded me why I woke up so early on a Saturday morning and raced to the TV set for a 1/2-hour of groovy fun. Enjoy!

Exactly what you expect,

'The Bugaloos' is exactly what you expect to get IF you've ever owned the original vinyl release. Yes, the songs are slightly different, but have you ever gone to a live show by any given band and heard them perform a song in the same exact way twice? For that matter, have you ever heard a studio cut that was rereleased on a new album that sounded exactly the same? Neither of those things ever happens. I think what happened here was that the tracks on this CD (and previously, the vinyl release) were recorded in a different session (and possibly a different studio) than the TV show tracks, so you get a bit more richness to the music, less tinniness. I don't know about you, but I think that's a good thing.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time (along with the likes of Boston, Led Zep, and Nine Inch Nails). I grew up with this music, so mayhap I am biased, but I think I know good music when I hear it. This is the epitome of teeny bop pop, circa 1970, and as such, I think it rocks! The one bad thing (mentioned in an earlier review) is that this CD is waaaay too short. But as with all great things, there's never enough. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some Megadeth.

I had this album as a kid and loved it until I got too old for this kid stuff. Almost from the moment I traded the album, I wished I had it back. I can still remember the words to most of the songs. A nice break and something you don't mind your kids hearing.

Even though rock was booming in the 1960s, it was, mostly, not in mainstream entertainment. The Beau Brummels were on the Flintstones, but program music was the white bread and definitively not rock
That changed with Sgt Pepper and Peter Max proverbial wallpaper all over. By about 1969, youth culture was selling screwdrivers. Tye dye hamburgers. Paisley hot water heaters. Bugaloos was a cartoon that took this to heart. This music is not rock and roll, or is it? Those coral voices had all the silk and shine of the Letterman, but the music is a whole different insect. With a rock bounce if not impulse, this music works as well as Lemon Pipers "Green Tamborine" or any Association hit. It is hip while being (1970) safe--youth music soft as baby's skin, handmade for a culture still getting used to TV married couples in the same bed and not yet ready to hear "pregnant" on the tube. But today, Buggaloos works as music, and if you find this all a-wobbly, go back and watch the episodes of the Brady Bunch on the brink of family crisis--Tiger has stolen Cindy's dolly, and Greg does not want the girls in the clubhouse. Heavy, man, heavy. But is Carol "......EXPECTING........?"

A steep import price and a playing time of less than 30 minutes makes this a real indulgence. This is fluffy, anodyne pop that's really only listenable in short bursts (about the length of this release, actually) by kitsch aficionados, so if you fit the bill, spend away. The sound quality is pretty good (apparently remastered), but there's practically no further information or exclusives apart from Japanese liner notes.

Yes, budget packaging contrasts with the import price. However, one gets their money's worth with this reissue. With arrangements by Al Capps (think Bobby Sherman's hits....it even sounds like some of the same session players backing the quartet) and the vocals of four unknowns (separately or harmonizing as a group), it all gels. Good sound quality, though VERY minor problems are audible; this would be due to the tape's condition, and not the remastering. The feeling of these tracks falls somewhere between the recordings of the Monkees and the Archies, and to good effect. If only bonus tracks featuring music from the show that didn't make it to record were included (even if they had to be dubbed from the original video masters), this set would be perfect! Anyway, it's a good buy, no matter how long it runs. More enduring than Jack Wild and a talking flute (that looks like a pretzel rod)! All the best, Brother Fang.

After purchasing the dvd and going down great childhood memories , I was glad to see that a cd of the songs were available. I am pleased with the sound quality, and have two friends who want this cd. Yet I do agree that the demo playbacks that was used on the actual show should have been added to this set as well, but there harmonies were just as superior to the Mamas and the Papas , as well as the early days of the Bee Gees. Caroline's lead vocals songs are great too , she sang beautifully as she was (and still is)."Just the memeory stays around" is the only track on this cd I believe was not ever played on the show. But I still love songs, like "For A friend" , and "It's new to you". so put on your disc , and relive the beauty of Tranquility Forest over again.

It was actually a Sid and Marty Kroft show that's why there were british actors. Kroft also did Lidsville, HR Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, Sigmund the Sea Monsters and many other shows that varied in an hour and 1/2 format each show running about 1/2 hour per episode. The US CD is being released March 14, 2006 at a much cheaper rate. Same songs less than 1/2 the cost. Is it as good as the import? I don't know, but it is worth a listen.
