Eaten alive by bugs!, August 15, 2011
Howard Barks is driving to a college reunion to see his old friend, scientist Dr. Ronald Reid, at Reid's mansion in the middle of an isolated swamp. He is accompanied by his daughter Karen. En route, they suffer some car trouble, which is bad for them, because at that very moment, a swarm of different kinds of insects, led by a tiger beetle named Cincidella, has heeded "The Call," an instinctual urge to feast on the flesh of human beings. Whilst getting out to inspect damage done to his car, Howard is swarmed and gobbled up by Cincidella and his cronies.
Karen Barks survives by remaining inside the car, and is later found after Ronald Reid begins to grow concerned for the Barkses tardiness and sends his butler Grollman to find them. The police, led by Sgt. Gary Rutledge, are called in to investigate, and confirm that it was indeed a swarm of insects that killed Howard. But the insect invasion has only just begun, and the college reunion is about to become a smorgasbord for Cincidella and his army of insects!
This is an... unusual book. On the one hand it's an affectionate parody of cliched horror stories (the spooky mansion in a swamp, the kooky, wheelchair-bound scientist Dr. Reid, the creepy butler Grollman, etc.), but it's quite bloody and gruesome. Also, a good chunk of it is, oddly, told from the point of view of the bugs, especially Cincidella, their ringleader. Weirdest of all is the fact that the insects don't actually want to heed "The Call" and kill and eat people, and feel bad about doing it, but are compelled to do so anyway for some reason. All in all, a strange and unique little book.
Oh, and despite this being advertised as being signed (presumably by author Donald Glut), my copy isn't. Oh well.
