Editorial Reviews

Review

An energetic ode to insects in a style that's Dr. Seuss meets Hieronymus Bosch... The madcap cartoons create an atmosphere that feels almost interplanetary, playing up the alien nature (and the diversity) of the insect world.
—Publishers Weekly

With bouncing rhyme and illustrations that demand multiple viewings, Bugs Galore is a rollicking celebration of all things creepy-crawly. This highly successful collaboration shows how well text and artwork can add up to something more... The main action is always clear and bold, but each spread features dozens of bugs with individual details, expressions, and actions. Kids will love identifying the little creatures specified in the text and discovering other stories through the pictures.
—School Library Journal

I love it and so does my 2 year old daughter.

It is her bedtime story we read to her every night, we've read so much she has memorized several parts and "reads" them to us during the day.

The illustrations of all the bugs are great and the rhymes are very clever.

This is a favorite in our house for our 3-year old, bug-loving little boy. The illustrations are fun and there's so many different bugs to look at. I gave it four stars because there are 2 aspects of the book I don't care for.

* One - is the text. It's short and cute, but reading it out loud it feels very simplistic.
* Two - are the bugs themselves. Only a few look like real bugs, and the rest are made up. So the learning value is kind of low. (But I do like to make up funny names for the bugs when my son asks).

The length of the book is ideal. It's not too long, but not too short, and it makes a good before-bed book. Overall it's fun and cute, and I would recommend it for kids under 4 who like bugs. I think older than 4 might find the text too simple.

It's Valentine's Day, so I gave my son a book: Bugs Galore. I definitely am not a fan of bugs. I will rescue any ladybug unlucky enough to end up in our house; I won't kill spiders if I know they are innocuous; and I'll even leave fire ant nests alone if there are in areas where no one walks -- they prey on termites; and if I'm outside and the bugs leave me alone, I will leave them alone, but that's pretty much is the extent of my affection for bugs. So, I wasn't really expecting to like a bug book. But I did. And more importantly, so did my four-year-old son. He called this a "beautiful bug book". The description is perfect.

We already have Cars Galore, and I really liked the writing in it. If possible, I like the writing in Bugs Galore even more. Peter Stein writes like he is reading out loud to a young child, which, of course, is the best way to write for young children. I don't know how he manages it, but his rhyming scheme and meter never feel forced or artificial. His text is so wonderfully picturesque that he just holds the door wide open for Bob Staake's illustrative wackiness to stomp right in. And it does.

Again, although I am NOT a bug person, I like the artwork in Bugs Galore even better than Cars Galore. Every page in Bugs Galore crawls with "beautiful bugs". There is a wonderful freedom in the sprawl of the crawling bugs that could not exist with cars on the road. I should point out that I am writing this review without having the book in front of me because my son took the "beautiful bug book" to his room and he won't let me have it back.

My son who is 5 months old and I love this book. There is so much to look at on every page and it's a joy to read with its play on words. It's one of the only books that my son will actually stay quiet and captivated for. I think it would be a great book for boys and girls alike. There is another book called Cars Galore by the same authors and I can't wait to order it!

I bought this after reading Cars Galore which our children love. Bugs Galore is cute and has the same silly rhymes but I think Cars Galore is a lot better. The rhymes in the Galore books will have your children giggling throughout storytime and they are fun for adults to read as well so they are a great addition to our kids library. If you don't have either Bugs Galore or Cars Galore I would recommend starting with Cars Galore.

My daughter (yes, daughter!) loved Cars Galore so I was really happy that these guys put out a sequel. It's PERFECT. Hard to describe the weird illustration style if you've never seen Bob Staake's work before---he's done lots of New Yorker magazine covers---but it's wonderful and appealing. The writing is a blast. It's very jaunty and quick, no plot, simple enough for really young kids like mine but smart enough for older ones too. For example: "Aaaah-bugs! Ewww-bugs! Crawl-on-YOU bugs! Stay away from crawl-on-POO bugs! (personal favorite). It goes on just long enough to hold a kid's interest. Mine NEVER gets bored. Great book. I love it, I recommend it.

This unique children's book is pure joy and imagination. I bought it for my 4 year old niece and she absolutely loves it. There is a plethora of silly and strange/alien like bugs as well as your standard creepy ones. When I saw it in the book store, I immediately knew it would be great as my nephew loves their other book, Cars Galore. Peter Stein and Bob Staake are a great duo. I found the illustrations whimsical, bright and colorful. That combined with the fantastic rhyming verses describing every bug imaginable really lured me to take it home for my niece. My favorite part is the ending when the writing identifies with the child's curiosity by posing a question to one of the bugs.
