Book Description

Motorbooks Workshop June 12, 2003
Ford's Model T put America on wheels. His flathead (valve-in-block) V8, introduced in 1932, was durable, powerful, and extremely adaptable and is the engine which inspired three generations of hot-rodders and put America onto the race tracks. "How to Build a Flathead Ford V-8" was written with machine-shop experience and features all the parts and procedures for three distinct engine build-ups. Detailed information features all clearances and machining procedures and includes 250 photos in full color.

• Captain George McNicholl is just that, a captain, master of deep-sea vessels out of Vancouver, Canada, for 30 years.

• Captain McNicholl has an abiding interest in the hot-rod Ford, and is a member of hot-rod and custom-car clubs, with specialties in the flathead and the Ardun modifications.

• McNicholl has built – "modified" – all three of the types of flathead shown in How to Build – carbureted, blown, and the Ardun type.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good aspects, some just okay., March 20, 2005

Not a lot of real in depth info, experience, or tricks and tips. The text reminds me of lots of magazine build-up articles, "disassemble this part, check clearance on that part, we used XYZ heads, etc." I would rate the information just average. On the other hand, the photography is EXCELLENT and all in color. The book is almost worth the price just for that, but don't buy it with the idea of learning a lot. Frank Oddo and Tex Smith's books are better in that regard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rebuilding a Ford Flathead V-8, March 8, 2007

This review is from: How to Build a Flathead Ford V-8 (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
This book is extremely beneficial for someone that wants to build a hot rod engine. The author explains what brand and part number he uses for different applications. He also explains all the machining that needs to be done and how to do it.

However, if you are looking for an instruction manual to overhaul your stock engine, you will have to look elsewhere. I'm still looking for a detailed manual that will walk a first time engine builder through an overhaul.
