Editorial Reviews

Review

Until the printing of this book, information on how to build a high-performance Mitsubishi 4G63t engine was only on the web. Offline sources of 4G63t information were very hard to find. Enjoy this book as it is very well presented. ---Engine Professional, reviewed by Mike Caruso, Apr-June 2009 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I am an educated Mitsubishi builder and found this to be a very informative book for the novice import enthusiast as well as the more educated tuner.

I bought the book recently on Amazon and must say it is EXCELLENT! One of my DSM buddies just bought it after seeing it and last night at a mini- DSM meet I showed it to a couple guys who looked through it and are now planning to buy it as well.

This book truly is an excellent reference guide on the 4G63T engine and the DSMs, Evo's and a few other cars that use it.

I am "SeaveeDSM" on the DSMtuners forums (one of the most well known forums about DSMs). This book is not a "substitute" to a car-specific forum with the wealth of knowledge available in that kind of environment nor is intended to be. But for a single-source reference where in one book almost every aspect of these engines is covered its simply fantastic.

Everything is covered from basics to more complex things about the engine. The color pics throughout are awesome and the writing style is such that even laypeople who are not mechanics (but with a basic understanding of engines) can grasp the concepts without being overwhelmed. Thats not to say its overly simplistic because its not at all. Anyone from a newbie to a certified mechanic or a prospective purchaser of a 4G63T based car would thoroughly benefit from this book.

Someone planning performance upgrades to a 4G63T based car especially should get this. It will save many times the cost of this book by following the very sound general advice and pros and cons of different performance path choices. The book does NOT try to steer someone to a particular brand or product in any way at all. It does however provide VERY accurate and correct information on the relative merits (or lack thereof) of various types of parts upgrade scenarios and paths.

This book is absolutely worth every of penny its price in my opinion.

As a "lifer" DSM owner and enthusiasts this book is a "must have".

I purchased this book a little less than a month ago and I must say it is a great technical reference book for this engine. The information presented is accurate and very up-to-date, as well as unbiased towards brand names. It can be hard to sift through forums for accurate, unbiased information. This book takes all the great research and development that RRE has done on the 4g63 and gives you a tried and true path for safely modifying your engine.

I bought the book a few months ago and am very glad I did. I used to know a lot about DSM's from all my research years ago. This book has been a great refresher. I also learned a ton that I didn't know.

I bought a few parts for my current build that now that I continue to read wish I hadn't. Now I'm determined to finish the book before I consider purchasing any other aftermarket parts. Highly recommended.

this is an incredibly well written book that covers pretty much all aspects of building a 4G63T in both platforms (DSM/GVR4/Evo 1-3 & Evo 4-9). it is written objectively, mentioning some companies as reference only. this book is not a giant RRE ad. long story stort, if you are building a 4G or are planning to, buy this book.

This book is so far the best book written on these engines, but it does not show any piston to wall clearence info or any in depth information like a haynes or chilton manual will.

The Pros: the book is all in color, with high quality images, some good general information everyone can walk away with, almost anyone will gain more info from reading it.

Now for the cons: upon reading it there are some typing errors particularly on pages 64,70 ,71 and page 73 it calls the 4G63T motor a 4G36T, and page 108 mentions 4D64.
it also fails to mention in the balance shaft elimination parts section, the oem part number for the crank shaft spacer, which replaces the old heavy front balance shaft pulley.
I also noted an error in their history, they claim the first Sirius motor in America was first seen in the plymouth/dodge colt vista, it was seen at least one year earlier in the rare Mitsubishi 1983 cordia/tredias it was called the 2.0 G63B, back then and they were also later had with the optional turbo 1.8 G62B motor both were fitted with SOHC heads
the first plymouth/dodge colt vistas came into the usa around 1984 or 1985, the cordia/tredia was among Mitsubishis vary first cars offered in the usa back in 1983.

regardless of how the book was inaccurate in some areas it was vary good book in many other places, I loved reading it and will definitely recommend this book to friends, or other dsm/evo owners who are seeking a good upgrade book.

sadly the first half of my copy got damaged, and I am now missing the front cover and pages 1 to 19 .
man I paid $40 for this book when it first came out too.

When I got my EVO VIII, I did not know anything about 4G engines. I am the kind of person that does not mind using a mechanic but also likes to do work on their own car whenever possible. This book nicely bridges that gap. The main technical author is Robert Garcia from Road Race Engineering (RRE) ([...]). When I got my EVO, some people told me these were the 4G gurus since the 90s and the DSM 4G cars. Since then, I do not let anyone else do work on my car. RRE are the EVO/DSM gods in So. Cal. and this book exemplifies this fact. Also, the book is priced where you don't really have an excuse to NOT have it if you have a 4G engine!! The book covers everything from basic bolt ons, to swaps to full on engine building. If you are planning a project, or if you just want to understand what that thing is under the hood of your EVO or DSM with a 4G engine, this book is for you.
