Review

"This book is one of those that will come along ever so often. Even if you are not building an Oldsmobile, the information is priceless." (Mike Caruso Engine Professional 2011-05-01)

From the Back Cover

The Oldsmobile V-8 is a unique engine platform among its Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, and Buick brethren. When these engines are correctly built and tuned for a particular application, they deliver enormous performance. Author Bill Trovato, a recognized Oldsmobile engine-building expert, shows you how to extract the most horsepower and torque from these V-8 engines built from 1964 to 1990. In this revised edition he explains the most effective assembly and machining techniques as well as selecting the most complementary parts for building a dominating street engine or class-winning competition engine. For more than three decades, Trovato has gained vital knowledge and insight into Olds V-8s from racing in the NHRA Stock Eliminator and Street Legal Drag Racing series, so he knows how to obtain maximum power from the design without sacrificing durability. Selecting and modifying factory blocks, cranks, heads, intakes, and other important components are covered. He also delves into the best aftermarket parts for exceptional performance for an engine package. Trovato explains the ideal ignition systems for high-performance applications and cooling solutions. Whether mild or wild, the important information for cam selection and Olds-specific engine-building techniques are all here.

If you want to build a fast and reliable Olds V-8 and prove that Oldsmobile V-8s can dominate, this is the book to get the job done. It details how to build up the small- and big-block engines from the muscle car era for maximum performance and durability.

I had presumed that Joe Mondello (RIP) was the ultimate authority on building Oldsmobile engines, but now I'm beginning to wonder. Author, racer and premier engine builder Bill Trovato directly contradicts some of Mondello's major tenets, supported by Trovato's years of experience and dynamometer test results. Whether you believe him or not, you've got to appreciate Trovato's frankness. This book offers another point of view and is a must-have reference for anyone building an Olds engine.

Very informative specific to Hi performance Oldsmobile V-8. Book is biased to authors experience and beliefs. Book is well written from a technical standpoint, and is very easy to understand.Well worth the money.

Bill is well known in the Oldsmobile and the NMCA Drag Racing Circles. If you know him or have read his postings on his web forum, this book is exactly what you would expect. Informative, professionally done and no punches pulled. Bill is very open about what has and hasn't worked for him. While it's hard for any book of this type to cover everything in detail, I can't imagine anybody who is building an Olds motor or having one built for them that wouldn't find this book well worth the investment. I highly recommend it.

This book is worth the price to any Olds enthusiast. If you read any online forums, you know Bill is a little impressed with himself, and it shows somewhat in this book. I kind of find that endearing in a way. Lots of helpful information here, but there are a number of comments that really could use more explanation. It is evident this was his first attempt at writing a book, and from that standpoint it's pretty good. Would like to see a second revision with some clarifications and some better editing from the publisher to draw a clearer distinction between basic engineering facts and Bill's opinions and anecdotal evidence. This book would benefit greatly if Bill teamed up with an experienced technical writer to help better organize and clarify the information.

This is a great book for those building drag race engines, and while some of the tips are applicable to Olds engines in general, a lot of the advice doesn't translate into building a street machine, so I was left wanting more from the book. Regardless, if you have an Olds engine, it's definitely worth the purchase, but plan to spend time with the RealOldsPower and OldsMobility, and ClassicOldsmobile guys to fill in the gaps.

If Bill writes a 'street machine' Olds book, I'll be the first in line to buy it (hint, hint).

The cost of this book is nothing compared to how much money are you going to spend to rebuild your engine and I rather get technical information from a NSCA World Champ than someone on a message board.

Lets say you only learn 3 things by reading this book, just one of them could be the difference between an engine that runs like a High Performance Oldsmobile engine should or one that doesn't.

Even if you are an experienced engine builder, there is information in this book you can use to your advantage. If you are building an Olds motor for the first time, you NEED this book. Even if you are having someone else build it for you, buy this book and lend it to them. Bill is the best there is in the Olds world, and will go the extra mile to help you achieve your goals.

Bill knows his Oldsmobiles. The longevity and power of his engine builds are proof that he knows what he is doing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone getting ready to start a performance Oldsmobile engine build. Much of his advice is based on his personal experience. The book is an easy read. Lots of useful information based on his experiences.
