For the money it was worth it as a first book, however I'd have to disagree with some of the statements, and the lack of detail here make it hard to design a pond using the information.

I'd skip the idea of using bentonite altogether, particularly in climates which have large temperature swings, and on sloped land, or less stable land of any type - I think its just plain wrong for these conditions. Besides that its not cheap. The authors should have pointed out the pros and cons here. Very bad idea to use it on embankments as a sealer. Also there's not much detail on pond design itself, or how to scout an area for building one.

No information on flow rates, oxygenation, planting strategies, and the information on forming embankments is a little misleading, asking an 'expert'
won't save you money in many cases or lead to better pond design.

A little information on pond orientation, none on pond geometry. Not much info on management, a little on stocking, nothing at all really on how to get a pond to support itself. A few useful reminders on designing drainage and overflow, and maintenance. I think they left out the idea that you need to drain embankments themselves to stabilize it (particularly if its clay) - and how to do that.

If you don't know where to start its reasonable, however I'd do a lot more studying before employing the suggestions.

We were curious about some of the things we'd need to consider if we were to make our own 'duck and fishing' pond. This pamphlet touched on the basics, & we're happy with it.

Hey!

I don't know much about building ponds, and I didn't even really buy this book for myself. However, I do find the book to be filled with reliable and important information. Do I think this 32 page book can give me all the information I might need to actually build a pond? No. Of course not. But it's a starting point, and a pretty good one, too. For the small price, I think it's worth it. But I do suggest you get some further information before undertaking such a serious operation such as building a pond. For that matter, I wouldn't suggest taking that on without at least consulting an expert, if not having them build it for you. Especially if this is your first time building a pond.

One thing to know, there are a lot of pictures. Unfortunately, they aren't as useful as they could be, as they are small and in black and white. Changing these to color would help immensely.

Anyway, hope this helps all you potential customers out there. Have a great day, and happy reading!

Luv ya,
Tashi :)

For a beginner like me, this is good enough to use to help me decide whether to build a pond. I only need something small with a water circulator, so much of this is too much info for me. If I had a book that addressed more variety, it'd be better. Anyway, I feel like it was over-priced for the size, and definitely needs updating.
