5.0 out of 5 stars Love metal working, but have no cash?, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Build Your Own Metalworking Shop from Scrap: Series Set (Paperback)
This series is great. I've built my own foundry using these instructions and can tell you that this is good stuff! There are, however, some caveats: I had a hard time learning some things because I had NO metalworking experience at all. A glossary for woodworkers would have been handy. Otherwise, it works as advertised. Years later, I still refer to it from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic For Do-It-Yourselfers Who Enjoy Metalworking!, August 27, 1997

Consider attempting to re-write the history of the advanced machine-shop right in your own garage! With this series you take an aluminum storm door, a bag of charcoal, some scrap wood and sand, and an old vacuum cleaner. With them you create a milling machine, lathe, drill press, scraper, and many fascinating deluxe accessories that actually perform (and in many ways out-perform) some of the same machines you buy at Sears. I've done this myself, so I know it's true -- and I live about 2 miles from the author -- and I've seen what he's done as well! I personally discovered just how durable aluminum is when used to build machine-shop equipment, but the best part is -- if something breaks -- no need to call 1-800-WHO-CARES!!! You built the machine -- you can easily fabricate a new replacement yourself

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought this for a friend who is a McGyver type of guy who will use the information to build a metal working shop in Uganda for missions. He researched carefully and decided these books are the best! They were exactly as described.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's to Dave, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Build Your Own Metalworking Shop from Scrap: Series Set (Paperback)
Gingery books are treasures for those that enjoy building, or wish they could build all kinds of wonderful and useful items for your home workshop. If you can read, and persevere you can follow the directions in Dave Gingery's books and build things that will amaze you. Dave has passed but his work lives on. Buy the books, they are inexpensive, and get started melting aluminum, or building a lathe, or a shaper. The directions are well written and clear, lots of pictures and the many hours of enjoyment is standard with each of his books.
