2.0 out of 5 stars Great for those in debt, not for those who want to experience more abundance
This book is appropriate for those with a very low self-image, who are struggling financially, have a lot of debt, or who prefer to ignore their financial situation all together. However, if you do already experience abundance (and perhaps want more), feel confident with keeping financial records (I'm not talking detailed records, I simply mean tracking how much you earn...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Anyone Who Handles Money, April 6, 2006
With consumer debt in this country reaching an all-time high, this book provides the tools to climb out of the hole and into financial prosperity. Its action exercises end the psychological confusion about money so that anyone can be financial fit. As a former teacher, this book should be a text-book must-read for all graduating students, getting a grip on their finances before it's too late. Bravo Joan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Build Your Money Muscles, March 8, 2006
I have found this to be one of the best books about money and self help. This book will take you where the others couldn't. This book will help you to understand why you are where you are with money. If you do this book, you will understand how you work out your issues through your money. Most people don't even know that they are doing that.

I can honestly say that I am making a lot more money now after this book than before. You can too.

Once in a while, I read a book that truly transforms my life. Build Your Money Muscles was such a book. Joan Sotkin's unique and penetrating insights into the roots of money problems helped me shift my perspective on my financial situation and make some difficult yet rewarding decisions. I recommend this book to anyone who is dissatisfied with their relationship with money and desires to make a shift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique book on the connection between money and feelings, December 14, 2005
In addition to exercises on basic financial behavior, the author stresses the importance of the feelings that occur when working with money. If you are looking for stock market tips, this is not the book for you. Instead, there is a sense of how to discover a deeper relationship with yourself, so that you can actually understand what is driving your behavior, whether it is getting into credit card debt, staying at an unproductive job, etc. I am reading this book for a second time to do the exercises more completely. Highly Recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for those in debt, not for those who want to experience more abundance, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Build Your Money Muscles: Nine Simple Exercises for Improving Your Relationship with Money (Paperback)
This book is appropriate for those with a very low self-image, who are struggling financially, have a lot of debt, or who prefer to ignore their financial situation all together. However, if you do already experience abundance (and perhaps want more), feel confident with keeping financial records (I'm not talking detailed records, I simply mean tracking how much you earn vs. spend), and perhaps even manage to save a little, this book is not for you. I can see the ability of this book to shift ones financial situation from poor to good, but not from good to great. As others have said, this book makes the connection between emotions and thoughts and ones financial freedom. However, all of the examples given are about really low end of the spectrum, negative thought patterns. The point is to recognize the negative emotions and thoughts that are holding you back, and then shift them. If you already have a positive outlook, feel like things are going well, and perhaps want them to be even better, reading all of these extremely negative thought patterns can have the opposite effect.

This review is from: Build Your Money Muscles: Nine Simple Exercises for Improving Your Relationship with Money (Paperback)
If you're uneasy about money, this book could help. Author Joan Sotkin earned her financial muscles the hard way: building a lucrative business then losing it. When she arrived in New Mexico, she had $200. That's when she started rebuilding her relationship with money. Her easy-to-read guide takes readers on an unexpected tour, one that goes inward and not to the bank. "A person's financial condition depends...on their internal environment," she writes, explaining that beliefs about ourselves often determine the state of our finances.

Throughout the book are exercises for re-thinking patterns surrounding money matters. The goal is to develop financial awareness--especially if you have Financial Vagueness Syndrome. That is, not reconciling checkbooks, maxing out credit cards, and perpetually wondering where all your money goes. She provides forms, charts and checklists to get started. Her approach uncovers a person's money beliefs, which she says are rooted in our childhood. Sotkin, who also does financial counseling, advises to envision money as a being you will interact with forever. Then you will "love, respect...and appreciate money and its place in your life." This book makes you look at money quite differently .
