4.0 out of 5 stars Funny old DOS book!
This is a funny little book -- somehow reminding me of the sweet old days of 286. Yes the book teaches you all the basics, polygon graphics, 3D math, sound, and flight physics. But it does it in a *very* old fashioned way. It uses assembler, relies purely on DOS, and makes no mention of Windows/DirectX/OpenGL.

If you are a casual programmer with a freebie DOS based...

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny old DOS book!, July 5, 1998

This review is from: Build Your Own Flight Sim in C++: Programming a 3d Flight Simulator Using Oop (Paperback)

If you are a casual programmer with a freebie DOS based compiler (i.e. djgpp) looking to learn the bare minimum of making a flight simulator, this book has *everything* you need. Those who aspire to higher grounds should probably start with another book, since some of the DOS specific things might be confusing for beginners.

Besides, the quality of the source code is less than top notch. It seems hacked at times. (What isn't in the back old days?) So buy it for curiosity sake...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good way to learn the basic building blocks of 2 & 3 D gra, May 6, 1999

This review is from: Build Your Own Flight Sim in C++: Programming a 3d Flight Simulator Using Oop (Paperback)
This books takes an easy to understand and clear approach to learn the mechanics of graphics programming. For historic reasons DOS is used, basically speed. The illustration of the use of assembler is given just to compare performance. You do not have to program in it. However , once the essence is grasped the reader can build on that foundation easily and with careful thought his own blackbox routines. The code works if you are using the same C++ compiler version of the author, else trivial changes are required. Put simply, buy it and save hours of flusration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definately worth buying for novice 3D game programmers., July 20, 1997

This review is from: Build Your Own Flight Sim in C++: Programming a 3d Flight Simulator Using Oop (Paperback)
While the actual source code for the game will probably not be of any great use to anyone at this time, I thought that it did an excellent job teaching the fundamentals of 3D design and rendering. I would consider it a "must have" for anyone just beginning to get into the world of graphics programming.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book, July 16, 2002

This is a very good book. If you know a little of C++ and would like to learn the beginning ins and outs of graphics, this is an excellent book. The author provides pretty much everything in a clear and to the point way. Being a computer science major at FAU I found that this book contains information that was not thought in class. Pick it up if you have free time and do not want to spent it reading Knuth and Ritchie... You'll be up and flying in no time.
