Review

Octane (UK), June 1, 2007

“Well-written and superbly laid-out. It should be inspirational for boys and girls of all ages.”

Product Description

The all-color practical Build Your Own Sports Car provides all the information needed to build a road-going two-seater, open-top sports car on a budget, using standard tools, basic skills and low-cost materials. The down-to-earth text clearly explains each step along the road to producing a well-engineered, high-performance sports car, providing a learning experience in engineering and design - and opening up a whole new world of fun motoring.

The Haynes Roadster, which has fully independent rear suspension, has been designed with the aid of CAD software to develop the chassis and suspension, resulting in a car with performance and handling to challenge many established kit cars and mainstream sports cars. The design is intended to make use of components sourced primarily from a Ford Sierra donor, although alternative donors are mentioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best DIY Car Instruction Book So Far, May 4, 2007
Chris Gibbs has taken the 'Locost' concept a step further. As this new book has CAD drawings (I believe done on Solidworks), it probably does not have any dimension errors that crept into the Ron Champion book. The book takes you through drawings and instructions so you can end up with a Ford Sierra (Merkur) based roadster. All you need are tools, patience, time, money and a lot of hard work. The single donor vehicle concept helps but only if the abovementioned vehicle is available (and affordable!) in your country. However, with some ingenuity and help from other builders online, you may be able to come up with something good. If you have questions there's even an official Haynes Roadster Forum to help you! Author Chris Gibbs participates in this official Haynes forum and posts updates to the book, corrections (yes even this book needs a few), advice and guidance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ron champion still the champion, September 11, 2007
I own all the previous editions of this book. This has been the least usefull unless you really do have the donor car used in it. I recommend the Ron champion book instead because it gives more latitude to adapt many old cars instead of one single rear suspension from a European ford. If this will be the first book of this type that you will purchase then I would recommend it. Those with experience and access to the internet would be better off with Ron champions book.

4.0 out of 5 stars locost by hanes, December 10, 2007

Great book, but definitely Eurocentric. None-the-less, this book offers excellent technical drawings. I recommend a calculator that converts metric measurements to inches if you want to use this as an assembly guide. An Excellent book for its intended purpose. This is of course, assuming like myself, you're a Yank.
