Extremely helpful book,
By Andria Strickley (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Build Your Own Web Site (Paperback)
I spent hours scouring the shelves for a book likethis, but could never find one-- until now. Build Your Own Web Site offers exactly the kind of step-by-step instruction non-techies need to put together a successful site, start to finish. Most web design books assume too much knowledge on the part of their readers. This one offers practical, easy-to-understand advice on issues such as how to obtain a domain name-- and other topics that can strike fear into the hearts of computer phobes. Wondering whether you need to learn HTML? Or what the heck a web-safe color is, anyway? It's all here in David Karlins' wonderfully straightforward book.

A very well organized book,

This review is from: Build Your Own Web Site (Paperback)
Build Your Own Web Site has something for everyone. This is an impressive book in that it completely demystifies the process of building a web site from A to Z. There are few books that truly begin at the beginning and discuss a wide variety of web tools; this makes web design accessible to everyone. It also simplifies the process for those who want to spend most of their time focusing on core competencies, rather that fighting through the labyrinth of developing and maintaining a web site. With a minimum of confusion, a novice can navigate the necessary steps required to build and maintain a presence on the web. In addition, independent web contractors will find this a useful guide since different companies often use the various web tools presented in this book and require their contractors to do the same. I was very impressed with the amount of knowledge packed into one volume. It is well written, well organized and very approachable. I will keep this book on the shelf as a personal reference, and I will recommend it to my students.Shelwyn Corrigan, web designer and instructor at the University of San Francisco, College of Arts and Sciences

This is the first book I've seen that recognizes that there is more to creating a web site than knowing a specific web development program. It explains in easy to understand terms, all of the steps necessary to do your web site...from start to finish. This is the perfect book for an individual or a small business that wants to create their own web site.

Very helpful basic book for a web site builder/beginner to understand about web sites. Too often books/teachers seem to think that the problem is not understanding the how the design program works when the problem is more basic, more conceptual. I look forward now to reading his book on Dreamweaver MX.

I am an absolute beginner in the world of website design. After researching numerous books and videos on the subject I came across David Karlins absolutely brilliant book. It is written in such a manner that even a ten year old would understand. Someone who truly understands the subject and posses real knowledge is capable of presenting the same in a simple way. I highly recommend this book to all people who have gaps and holes in understanding of the process of creating web site.

Wonderful Resource for Building A Website!,
By Susan , Volunteer Webmaster (Fairhope, AL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Build Your Own Web Site (Paperback)
Build Your Own Website by David Karlins is a wonderful book. If you would like to create your own website, this book provides you with the important information from what is a domain, what you need to know and what services you may need for web hosting. He reviews some software for web design and gives you the pros and cons of the software and examples on how to use them. He covers how to optimize your site for search engines and how to submit your site to search engines. He also provides many tips and URL's that you can go to for additional information and where you can find free scripts to use in your website. David's own website provides useful reference material. I would encourage members of small local organizations who would like to have their own website on a low budget to read this book. As a member of some small non-profit organizations, I have created two websites and am maintaining three websites. You do not have to be a computer professional to do this. I wish that I had this book a couple of years ago because it would have saved me time and effort digging out this information from other sources.

This review is from: Build Your Own Web Site (Paperback)
This book is straight to the point and does not require to be read in any particular sequence aside from the 1st chapter. After that you can bounce around to the sections you need which impact you most. Good reading and a good resource.

Best book for beginners,
By Aj Viljoen (Kuwait) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Build Your Own Web Site (Paperback)
A few months ago I realised my two businesses need websites. I got from the professionals and promptly decided to do it myself. I reasoned that I could buy MS Frontpage, plus all the books I needed and do everything for less than 10% of what the quotes came to. I was right. And wrong.
I never realised how scared I was of Frontpage, so I compensated by buying way too many books. The good thing is that I am now in a very good position to tell you which books are worth your while and which are rubbish. I was right in that one can publish your own website for a lot less than I expected. I was wrong in that of all the books I'd bought, I only needed one. You guessed it. "Build your own web site" makes publishing a web site ridiculously easy. I am serious. The other books all have these clinical, corporation-type covers, so I looked at them first, and started building my site. For some reason, I was put off this book somehow. As if I thought, if the others have these professional looking covers, they must be the better books. How wrong I was. This book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with how to prepare - how to decide what goes onto your site, how to plan, how to put everything together et cetera. How to design your site. I followed it to the letter and it worked. Part 2 is subdivided into subsections, each dedicated to a different type of web development programme (such as Dreamweaver, Frontpage etc). I only read the Frontpage bit and that is how far I got. Because by that time I knew everything I needed to build great websites! The money I spent on the other books is wasted money. This book helped me tremendously, and in record time. I might put a link to my site in my "About You" area, so you can see for yourself. But the point is that I was able to create a functional website, with some nice features, within the span of a day or two, on Frontpage, with absolutely no prior experience. NO other book available could do this. David Karlins is a genius. This is without a doubt the best (beginner's) book on web designing of all the ones I've seen. In fact, nothing else comes close. The funny thing is that this book was the cheapest of the bunch! |
