4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent broad brush, January 22, 2007

This review is from: Builder's Essentials: Framing & Rough Carpentry (Paperback)
While I found this book to cover virtually every aspect that it purports to cover, it does so from such a removed position, without giving many of the details that I was looking for. Additionally, the author seems to get caught up in subjects - such as efficiency vs hourly rate for productivity - that doesn't lend any details to the subject of the book. The book was supposed to be written for someone putting together a framing crew and presenting techniques which have proven themselves. It seems to do this well, but if you're looking for the details (I wanted a table showing what size headers vs opening width) then it probably isn't really what you want. Also, while he references building codes, there really isn't a good treatment of them - and yes, I recognize that every areas of the country may have different codes. I am a retired electrical engineer that has worked in building design and construction all my career and am currently in the middle of multiple remodels on my house. While an easy read and interesting book, it just didn't give me what I was looking for - I wish I hadn't bought it. I tried to find it in a bookstore so I could browse it before committing to a purchase - one problem with buying over the internet. Maybe I should put it up for resale on here.
