Book Description

August 29, 2003 1590592565 978-1590592564

The authors base the books sample intranet on Microsofts free best practices example, the IBuySpy Portal, and teach you to quickly create an application that exploits the advanced features of ASP.NET. A full explanation of the IBuySpy Portal architecture is provided, which allows you to maximize product usage.

Further, the authors explore customizing existing portal modules, and even build some of their own. In the course of reading, you will acquire a breadth of techniques for ASP.NET development—from effectively using stored procedures, to creating an advanced user interface with ASP.NET Web Controls.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The readers we are aiming at with this book have some ASP.NET programming experience. They are comfortable with basic ASP.NET techniques such as data access and web controls. They will have at least seen some examples of more advanced techniques such as security, caching, and web services. Our readers will not necessarily have built an intranet before. The code will be presented in VB.NET. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview of the IBuySpy application, October 18, 2002
Having installed and made a few (trivial) changes to the IBuySpy portal application, I decided to get this book in order to make sure that I didn't 'miss any tricks'.
The book doesn't disappoint. It's a good overview of the application with detailed instructions on the installation process and operational level usage of the product.

A useful discussion of the portal architecture is followed by detailed discussions of the underlying concepts of security, specific modules, content and document management.
Finally, there is an analysis of a new module - Human resources management, in which all the issues that you would normally have to deal with in a real-world development are met.

The only real disappointment was that the download code listed in the book was not yet available from Wrox.com - no doubt that will be resolved in short order.

There are more than a thousand instances of the IBuySpy portal already on the web, with many hundreds more in the making. This book is an ideal introduction to the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Devil is in the Details, October 21, 2002
By
Alton J Henley (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This is the book I have been waiting for! Since last summer, when ASP.NET was (somewhat) introduced and the best practices app IBuySpy was released, I and others have awaited a tome that would walk us through the process of building an ASP.NET intranet step-by-step and this book is it.

It starts off by highlighting what is important to have in an intranet but it quickly gets down to the nitty-gritty of (1) dissecting IBuySpy and (2) showing how to customize and extend the IBS application to a full fledged intranet portal. Their explanations are well written and concise and there were a number of topics that I was able to finally understand.

This book is not exactly for newbies, but for the person that has gotten their feet wet with ASP.NET and wants to get his or her hands dirty with a serious project.

I only have one negative point about this book and it is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. No CD and No online code.

I do not know about the rest of you, but I would have prefered to spend an extra 5-10 dollars not to have to type all of this code over again. Additionally, the authors use an abstracted database class in all of their code that is supposed to be downloadable from the WROX website, but, at this time, is not available, which was very frustrating. The upside is, I ended up re-writing it myself, so I actually ended up learning more!

All in all, a good book and well worth the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good book written poorly, March 25, 2003
By A Customer
I bought this book in hopes of using it to design a good intranet portal for our company. The book is written poorly and doesn't really help you implement the modules discussed in the book. I have tried countless times to implement what was discussed in the book but the code never works, I am using the code which was downloaded from the publisher's website so it should work according to their instructions. Another downside is the author no longer supports the code in the book so if problems happens you are on your own, I would think a publisher would support their own code and be able to answer questions about it. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed with the book, I had high hopes for it but it just didn't work the way it should have.
