5.0 out of 5 stars Short, direct, and to the point March 21, 2012
By Rick G.
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't read a lot of author how-to books. The main reason: a lot of them are 1/3 advice and 2/3 self-congratulatory pats on the back, full of tales of how awesome they are. The second reason: most of them are over-priced.

I believe Ms. Neal hits a sweet spot on both of the above accounts. Just enough information to let you know that she's doing well and that this is told from the perspective of a successful author (This is important. No author wants to read a how-to-sell-more book from someone who's selling less than themselves.), while at the same time acknowledging that this is a quick read by not gouging the customer for it.

Ms. Neal gets right to the point and doesn't linger with unnecessary details. She tells you what she did, why she did it, and her results. This isn't a get rich quick book. She puts heavy emphasis on the need to put in the time and effort to both hone your craft and your marketing efforts. As such it serves as handy quick reference guide for both new authors and those looking to step up their game a bit.

I received an advance review copy of this book.

As someone who has been published traditionally by major houses as well as going the self-publishing route, the first thing I'd like to say is that I wish--oh, how I wish--that I'd had this nifty guide to launching a book on my desk from the very start. I became a fan of Toby Neal's after reading her best-selling mystery novel, Blood Orchids, because this novelist knows how to create suspense on every page, develop likable characters, and describe lush settings you don't want to leave. So I wasn't at all surprised to discover that, when she turned her attention to generously sharing how she built her reader base even before publishing her book, she would again write captivating prose that lets you flow along rather than struggle to understand. I learned more about book marketing from this slim booklet than I have from hours and hours of researching the same topic online. Whether you're a seasoned author or a newcomer to publishing, save yourself some valuable writing time, and read this first!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, Sweet and Packs a Powerful Punch March 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Toby Neal delivers a no-nonsense, straightforward account of the steps she took to build the platform that launched BLOOD ORCHIDS to the number one Kindle Free spot on Amazon. Her advice is practical, easy to understand, and even easier to implement.

Don't misunderstand - what Ms. Neal proposes takes work. Consistent, creative, and sometimes hard, work. But she explains the tools and techniques she uses to connect with and excite readers while managing that most valuable commodity: her time.

I read this book in one sitting but will go back to it over and over again. For the price, you really can't go wrong.
