About the Author
Born in Nigeria in 1932 to parents who practiced an African indigenous religion, Francis Arinze converted to Christianity at the age of nine. He was ordained a priest in 1958, and was named bishop in 1965 and archbishop of Onitsha in 1967. In 1984, Pope John Paul II chose him to be president of the Vaticans Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, where he served until 2002. In 1985, Arinze was made a cardinal.
