Moscow's biography of an American business follows the rise of a tiny entrepreneurial home-building operation from conception in Florida in the 1940s through its takeover by the powers of Wall Street in the 1990s. Jim Walter, the man with the dream, saw a need for low-cost housing; with borrowed money, he started filling that need. Building small houses for under $1000, even in 1946, was quite an accomplishment, especially appreciated by the many ex-servicemen, and Walter's partnership with Lou Davenport was an immediate success story. Nearly 50 years later, Jim Walter Homes builds over 4000 houses a year, with a basic shell home of 720 square feet selling for $22,045. Business students will find reading this case study a pleasure.?Susan Awe, Jefferson Cty. P.L. System, Arvada, Col.
