Book Description

1578700930 978-1578700936 May 15, 2000 1st
A primary text for intermediate level courses in Cisco certification and multilayer switching.Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks is the ONLY official coursebook based on the Cisco authorized course of the same name. Based on the content of the new BCMSN course, this book focuses on building and managing high-speed Ethernet campus networks. It defines for the student the Cisco-recommended campus network design, then provides an in-depth look at Layer 2 switching technologies such as Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN technologies, frame tagging protocols, VLAN Trunk Protocol (VTP), and Dynamic Trunk Protocol (DTP). The book also covers Layer 3 routing services provided in the campus network, including inter-VLAN routing, Multilayer Switching (MLS) configuration, Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP), and IP multicast configuration. Finally, the book covers securing the switched campus network model, including setting passwords, local and remote login, modifying default privilege levels, and applying Layer 3 traffic management techniques to the campus network. There are no book available that can compete with the official Cisco training class materials provided in the Coursebook.

From the Back Cover

Cisco authorized self-study book for CCNP Switching foundation learning

* Prepare for CCNP or CCDP certification while learning how to build and manage switched campus networks offering a combination of Layer 2 and Layer 3 services
* Understand how to deploy the required Cisco products and services that enable connectivity and traffic transport in multilayer switched networks
* Improve IP performance by identifying multilayer switching devices, configuring multilayer switching services, verifying multilayer switch flows, and applying flow masks
* Manage redundant links through proper application of transparent bridging and Spanning-Tree Protocol
* Implement the necessary services at each layer of the network for efficient implementation of multicast groups
* Control network traffic by implementing the necessary admission policy at each layer of the network topology

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks is a Cisco authorized self-paced learning tool. It teaches you how to build and manage campus networks using multilayer switching technologies. The book addresses both routing and switching concepts, covering both Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies. If you are pursuing CCNP or CCDP certification, this book helps you with strong and accurate early study material.

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks presents detailed information on how routing and switching technologies work together. This book first defines Cisco recommended campus network design methodologies. You will receive an in-depth analysis of Layer 2 switching technologies, including Spanning Tree, VLAN technologies, frame tagging protocols, and Cisco proprietary support protocols such as VTP and DTP. The book then covers Layer 3 routing services provided in the campus network, including inter-VLAN routing, multilayer switching, Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP), and IP multicast. Finally, the book covers securing the switched campus network model, including setting passwords, local and remote login, modifying default privilege levels, and applying Layer 3 traffic management techniques to the campus network. Several case studies demonstrate the implementation of multilayer switching technologies. Additionally, each chapter contains questions to help you assess your understanding of key concepts and start you down the path for attaining your CCNP or CCDP certification.

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press. 4.0 out of 5 stars Used this book to pass BCMSN, August 19, 2000
This review is from: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (Hardcover)
Passed the BCMSN by using just this book. Give yourself time with topics like VLANS/VTP/STP/MLS. Read every word and you cant fail the exam. Two questions were right out of this books end-of-chapter questions. Can't say more because of the NDA. Anyway, also read just a little generic "the different components and modules" of the Catalyst 5000 switch....from Cisco documentation. Four stars because of the writing style. A little boring at times and the same thing said over and over. I think the mapping of multicast IP addr to 01-00-5E-xx-xx-xx could have been better explained with a detailed example. Work that one out in detail...with paper and pencil till u get whats being said. Again VLANS/VTP/STP/MLS (every command, every detail).........all else, just read once thats it. Conceptual knowledge will get you through for sure even if u dont know a single command ......and this book does that well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good study guide, July 11, 2000
This review is from: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (Hardcover)
If you are preparing yourself for Cisco's Switching exam (640-504), or you just want to know more about Cisco's switches, this is a very good book. It has helped me towards my CCNP 2.0 certification. However, at this price, it should at least have a CDROM with sample questions.
