Used this book to pass BCMSN,

This review is from: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (Hardcover)
Passed the BCMSN by using just this book. Give yourself time with topics like VLANS/VTP/STP/MLS. Read every word and you cant fail the exam. Two questions were right out of this books end-of-chapter questions. Can't say more because of the NDA. Anyway, also read just a little generic "the different components and modules" of the Catalyst 5000 switch....from Cisco documentation. Four stars because of the writing style. A little boring at times and the same thing said over and over. I think the mapping of multicast IP addr to 01-00-5E-xx-xx-xx could have been better explained with a detailed example. Work that one out in detail...with paper and pencil till u get whats being said. Again VLANS/VTP/STP/MLS (every command, every detail).........all else, just read once thats it. Conceptual knowledge will get you through for sure even if u dont know a single command ......and this book does that well.

If you are preparing yourself for Cisco's Switching exam (640-504), or you just want to know more about Cisco's switches, this is a very good book. It has helped me towards my CCNP 2.0 certification. However, at this price, it should at least have a CDROM with sample questions.

Brilliant...,

There are probably 3 books which you would need for the new switching exam - this book, the Sybex equivalent and the Exam Cram. Together you will pass. Of the 3 - this is probably the most in depth and technical - it has all the info for the exam and more....an excellent product from the guys at Cisco (would you expect any less???)

Great Book!!!,

Real great book. Covers everything you need to know for the CCNP Switching 2.0 exam. Multilayer switching is covered in detail. Actually, mapping multicast addresses to layer 2 addresses could have been covered in greater detail. She did a real shallow and thrivial work on that. Might have to do some more research on that. Used a 5505 and catalyst 1900 switch to study for the exam and passed on the first attempt last month. Know your Vlans and VTP real well. Can't say too much due to the disclosure issue, but this book will give you all that you need. It is real technical and not so exciting so if you're not accustomed to reading books of that nature and looking for something easier and more fun, then go elsewhere. The book also has excellent labs at the end of every chapter and they help reinforce what you've learned and actually put it into real world practice. If you can get your hands on a couple of switches(5505 and 2820/1900), man, you not get only the theoritical knowledge but the hands on to deploy a real multilayer switch network. You need this book!!! Taking my remote access next week and the support 2.0 2 weeks after that.

Building CISCO Multilayer Switched Networks,

This review is from: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (Hardcover)
The book is generally very good. There is a wealth of detailed information presented in an understandable manner. Providing you have some knowledge of networking you shouldn't have to many problems. My one gripe about this book is the amount of mistakes, There everywhere, from wrong IP addresses in diagrams, bad descriptions to plain wrong content. I know this because I've read the book five times along with many many documents available on the CISCO web site. So if you doubt what you read check it. At the end of the day there are very few good books around that cover the BCSN exam in detail. This one does

Test Passed!,

This review is from: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (Hardcover)
I purchased this book because I had taken the BCMSN course but the course material content was full of errors. I had taken the Beta exam and missed passing by only a few points so I had an idea of what to study. This book is easy to read. Not as dry as a lot of other material and had pertinent information. I recommend this book as well as some lab time/hands on switch time and review for passing Cisco 640-504 switching test.

This book is well written and the end-of-chapter exercises are definitely very useful for learning basic multilayer commands for Cisco Catalyst switches. This book would definitely be of great help if you're studying for the BCMSN exam, too.

This book is definitely better than the McGraw Hill book. I read both books and found this one better. Don't waste your time finding any other book for exam.
