4.0 out of 5 stars Essential information for all fire fighters

2.0 out of 5 stars A Fire Buff's Guide to Building Construction
"The author once observed a television show..."
This book is full of anecdotes, speculation, and opinion. I prefer the IFSTA book. I do respect Brannigan's contribution to the field, but I think better texts are now available.

Working fire fighters can't read this book without feeling both more confident (from their increased knowledge) and more frightened (from realizing how much they DIDN'T know before). While some of the author's "tactical considerations" and advice on actual fireground operations are kind of silly, his knowledge of building construction is vast and he's able to communicate in non-technical, plain English. I learned a lot from this book, and would recommended to any fire fighter.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for the Fire Service., June 7, 2003
This review is from: Building Construction for the Fire Service (Hardcover)
This should be required reading for anyone in the fire service who deals with Structural fire fighting. The book is pretty straight forward and in an easy to read font. I love this book. It also has a pretty decent index if you're using it for school. Out of all the books I've had to buy for school so far, this is the best one. If you're a fan of Brunacini, you may find a few points where they disagree, thus creating the great debate between which author is right. The principles of this book are easily put to use in day to day firefighting and could possibly save your life.

This is not an easy reading book. Dry and distant at times it is however the finest collection of fire dept related constrution information ever collated. Whether you like it or not you MUST read this book. The information within could make the difference when your backs against the wall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Notabily the "Dean of Building Construction for the Fire Service", September 9, 2007
The late Francis L. Brannigan was truly the "Dean" of the American Fire Service modern era. He was the very first and the best at putting the emphasis on structural safety for fire fighters and the general public. Francis was the first and foremost outspoken fire service professional at speaking out against lowering building construction standards and pointing out what's killing fire fighters and occupants in substandard building construction. This is a must read for all of those in the fire service, builing code officials and those in the building trades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good insight, January 4, 2007
I was lucky enough over the years to have attended classes taught by Mr Brannigan. Yes, it is all over the place. But I can tell you this, this book has saved my life more than once. That was Mr Brannigans motivation the whole time when he wrote this book, not to make money, but to save lives. He was a great man and will truly be missed by many. If you are in the fire service, this should be one of the books you own.

I bought this book on-line through amazon because to buy it through a college buy back program or other on-line text book website would have cost much more. I found it cheaper here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for FIREFIGHTERS!, December 2, 2010

This review is from: Building Construction for the Fire Service (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I had to for a College class. As I read through it though, it made clear some different things especially in regards to firefighting and firefighting techniques with certain structure designs and types. Since the class, I have become well versed with Building Construction and use it as a Safety Officer quite alot. I still reference it after some fires to help determine training and after action reviews.
