Product Description

Presenting one's portfolio is where every designer begins his or her career. Therefore, crafting a portfolio, whether online or for presentation in person, is an essential skill for survival. Because a portfolio can make or break a career, it is vital that designers go out armed with all the right moves and materials.

This book talks both to the professionals who have both designed their own portfolios and those on the other side of the table who have looked at scores of portfolios, to uncover the tips and tricks that have won jobs, as well as the must-avoid moves that have lost opportunities. This book is not only a handbook for dos and don'ts; it also provides plenty of inspiration from a wide collection of portfolios, both virtual and real-life.

This book asks leaders in the field about the real-world realities of presenting one's work for consideration and answers the question, "What sells and what doesn't."

About the Author

Sara Eisenman started her career at Random House in 1977 designing books and their covers for Pantheon, Knopf, Modern Library and Random House. She was appointed Art Director for Knopf jackets in 1983. Four years later, she moved to Boston and became Houghton Mifflin Trade Art Director. In 1993, Eisenman took an eleven year post as Creative Director at Beacon Press in charge of the design for all printed materials produced by the press. She has taught at Columbia (formerly Radcliffe) Publishing Course for fifteen years, and Rhode Island School of Design. Eisenman has received numerous awards for her book jacket, cover and interior designs and art direction.

It's almost more of a showcase though than a learning tool. I don't feel that the author teaches much. She shows the portfolio then describes a little about what makes it work, and that is all. I would prefer it if she also showed some bad portfolio designs and show why they do not work. Some of the web portfolio she shows are pretty lackluster. One is built with flash and has pixelated type. The 'design' of it doesn't seem all that fantastic either. I felt like many of the portfolios shown were more about theory than practice. Cutsie ideas that may work in a school environment but may not work in the real world. This is a pretty good book. It shows a variety of portfolios and explains some of the ideas that went into them. It's almost more of a showcase though than a learning tool. I don't feel that the author teaches much. She shows the portfolio then describes a little about what makes it work, and that is all. I would prefer it if she also showed some bad portfolio designs and show why they do not work.

I think this is a great book for those looking for ideas on making a new portfolio. Especially students about to graduate (like me). I got the idea for my portfolio from this book. It shows a ton of awesome examples in there and it is really inspiring.
