4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, but could be better
This is a pretty good book. It shows a variety of portfolios and explains some of the ideas that went into them. It's almost more of a showcase though than a learning tool. I don't feel that the author teaches much. She shows the portfolio then describes a little about what makes it work, and that is all. I would prefer it if she also showed some bad portfolio...

3.0 out of 5 stars not for architecture portfolios
I thought this would be a book that would help me in desinging my architecture portfolio, but it's really not that great. Get Harold Linton's book instead.

This is a pretty good book. It shows a variety of portfolios and explains some of the ideas that went into them. It's almost more of a showcase though than a learning tool. I don't feel that the author teaches much. She shows the portfolio then describes a little about what makes it work, and that is all. I would prefer it if she also showed some bad portfolio designs and show why they do not work.

Some of the web portfolio she shows are pretty lackluster. One is built with flash and has pixelated type. The 'design' of it doesn't seem all that fantastic either.

I felt like many of the portfolios shown were more about theory than practice. Cutsie ideas that may work in a school environment but may not work in the real world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read, October 30, 2006

While I'm not a design newbie, I am still in the beginning of my career and my portfolio continues to be a challenge. This is the first book on portfolios that I've actually found to be helpful and inspiring. I love that she shows and addresses resumes and cover letters, and I love that various types of portfolios are addressed. I only wish there were more comments/quotes/advice from well-known designers in the industry. It feels like the ones that were included were rather old or too specific to one area of design. But overall, definitely worth the read.

This is the information I've been needing to assemble a portfolio that will shine. I think it should be require reading for anyone in Graphic Design who is trying to sell themselves through their portfolio.

I think this is a great book for those looking for ideas on making a new portfolio. Especially students about to graduate (like me). I got the idea for my portfolio from this book. It shows a ton of awesome examples in there and it is really inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Portfolio reference book, January 9, 2007
This book is great at getting ideas going for portfolio's and resumes. Unlike other books I have where they just show you very basic layouts, this book shows you very innovative ideas and various ways to go about designing and creating your portfolio.

4.0 out of 5 stars not really for architects, March 4, 2009
I am an architect with 15 years experience, and am thinking of making a book type portfolio. This book has some nice images but it is primarily geared toward graphic designers. I would not recommend it for an architecture design portfolio. The title is a little misleading..... Building Design Portfolios..... its not about "building" in the sense of constructed habitats....
Beautifully designed book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - really helpful, August 26, 2007
This is a great book - I have found it to be very informative and the author is quite thorough. Gorgeous images and I am really happy with the purchase.

I just wish someone would write a book such as this relative to the Asia Pacific market!

Definitely worth a look as it is really well presented.

This review is from: Building Design Portfolios: Innovative Concepts for Presenting Your Work (Design Field Guide) (Paperback)
this book is amazing, it is so informative and helpfull to the graphic design or art student looking to get into their career, it showcases other peoples portfolios so you get an idea of what the competition is doing, i recomend this book to anyone, BUT to the publisher or auther or book cover designer, BAAAD job, i mean i get that the book is a portfolio ha ha ha, cool, but it drives me crazy to have that flap on it, come on make it a dust cover so i can remove it... but still a book worth having
