Book Description

For a number of years, the healthy and environment-friendly building material earth, in common use for thousands of years, has been enjoying increasing popularity, including in industrialized nations. In hot dry and temperate climate zones, earth offers numerous advantages over other materials. Its particular texture and composition also holds great aesthetic appeal.

The second and revised edition of this handbook offers a practical systematic overview of the many uses of earth and techniques for processing it. Its properties and physical characteristics are described in informed and knowledgeable detail.

The author’s presentation reflects the rich and varied experiences gained over thirty years of building earth structures all over the world. Numerous photographs of construction sites and drawings show the concrete execution of earth architecture.

This review is from: Building with Earth: Design and Technology of a Sustainable Architecture (Paperback)
This Gernot Mink's book is a great purchase. Its a practical technician book, with all needed information about buinding with loan, clavey soil, prefabricated panels, etc.. I think it is designed to builders and architects, but it is very easy to understand and can be read by everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars top rated earth construction reference, August 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a professional natural builder with about a dozen straw/clay and straw bale structures under my belt, I have to say that Gernot Minke's work is thorough, informative and inspiring. This book resides in a happy place on my reference shelf. It would be great if we had the same building research laboratory work going on here in the states. I would love to sit down with Gernot over a couple of craft brews!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for innovative builders, July 12, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This book I deem a 'collection piece'. It presents sufficient formulas, graphics, tables and methods to be able to face any earthen construction project.

Clear, a bit upbeat in which language is concerned (no susprise coming from the Germans), but with time you get used to it.

I woudn't risk lending it.
