Editorial Reviews

Readers who are looking for a good book that screams mystery and romance...Building of Ashes was made for you.--Mandy, I Read Indie
Building From Ashes is what I have been waiting for ever since I read A Hidden Fire! Carwyn is one of my favorite of Elizabeth's characters and it was wonderful to read his story. The way Elizabeth Hunter weaves the past and present to deliver this story as a whole is genius. 5 stars--Rebecca, Bending the Spine
Building from Ashes is not a love story so much as it is a 'life story' of Brigid and Carwyn. ...Excellent story set in a rich, vibrant world.--BamaGal, Goodreads reviewer

From the Author

Dear readers,
I hope you enjoy this first book in the expanded Elemental World universe. From the beginning of the Elemental Mysteries, readers have been asking when I was going to write Carwyn's book. I knew he had a story to tell, but I also knew that it had to happen at the right time. This was the right time. I hope you enjoy reading Building From Ashes as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Thanks for reading,

I suppose I should say right up front that if you have not read the 4 book series The Elemental Mysteries by Elizabeth Hunter before you read this book it will be impossible for you to have the full enjoyment of this novel. Subsequently, be aware that all opinions in this review are from someone who HAS read that masterpiece of Paranormal Literature. The correct reading order should be (it should be noted at this point that ALL of these books are 5 Star rated and not just by myself, check for yourself):

A Hidden Fire: Elemental Mysteries Book One
This Same Earth (Volume 2)
The Force of Wind (Volume 3)
A Fall of Water: Elemental Mysteries Book Four (Volume 4)
Building From Ashes (Elemental World) (this book)

I received this book as an ARC from the author unconditionally.

This novel for all practical purposes is a trilogy in one cover, it is divided into 3 "books" and each has a plot and a main thrust to it while all proceed towards a main theme which as with previous works is a masterful combination of action, romance and mystery.

-- 3.5 stars -- Let's get the BAD out of the way first: I felt that this book could have been "more." I LOVED Carwyn in the Elemental Mysteries Series and was excited for him to find love. In my opinion, Bridgid wasn't all that likeable. I didn't necessarily DISlike her, but I didn't love her the way I loved B in Hunter's other books. The build-up of the romance was slow (that was good) but almost boring at times. When I read Elemental Mysteries -- despite the slow build and thorough development of the characters, I couldn't put the books down. I found with Building From Ashes that I needed a break every now and then.

Now the GOOD -- It was cool to see a different side of Carwyn. He was still true to himself in this book, but you got to see more of the vicious, protective fighter as well as the romantic. It was neat how this book overlapped the time frame in the Mysteries Series. We got to see what Carwyn was up to when Gio and B were wondering where he was and why he was acting strange.

Overall, I liked the book. It was boring at times, heroine was just "so-so," but I am still looking forward to the next book in the series. NOTE: I really think you have to read the 4 Elemental Mysteries books first, otherwise you might be lost -- you certainly wouldn't be able to appreciate this book as much without reading the others first.

Building from Ashes by Elizabeth Hunter
5/5 stars
Source: author for a fair and honest review

I am officially out of adjectives to describe exactly how much I love Elizabeth Hunter and the Elemental Mysteries world she has so beautifully crafted! Building from Ashes is Carwyn¡¦s story and is a stand-alone companion to the Elemental Mysteries series. As always I find myself unable to assign anything other than 5 stars to this excellently written novel.

Carwyn is a one thousand year old vampire who is the leader of his large clan, a lover of loud and ridiculous Hawaiian shirts and professional wrestling and, a Catholic priest (yes, the Vatican knows about his fangy bits!) who has always placed his love of God, church, and family above his own needs and desires. To the world Carwyn is always the life of the party telling jokes and pulling pranks and appearing to genuinely enjoy his long life. Underneath the jovial exterior is the more private Carwyn, a passionate man of faith and devotion; a cunning, strong, and deadly fighter who will protect those he calls his own no matter the cost. Though many in the immortal community know and respect Carwyn they also often underestimate him and the lengths he will go to protect those he loves and holds dear. That never goes well º

Brigid is a fiercely tough, highly intelligent, independent yet loyal human who has been under the aegis of Ioan and Deirdre (Carwyn¡¦s ¡§children¡¨) since she was forcibly removed from her abusive household as a small child. Brigid¡¦s life has undoubtedly been hard, even near-unbearable at times but she has never wanted nor accepted anyone¡¦s pity.

I have been looking forward to this book for a long time now. When I was first introduced to the Elemental Mysteries Series earlier this year, not only did I fall in love with Gio, but Carwyn absolutely stole my heart. This book exceeded my expectations in giving Carwyn the story he deserved.

Carwyn has been a priest for over a thousand years. He's also an immortal vampire. The element that he draws power from is Earth. He's goofy, sweet, family oriented, loyal, and charming. Well, I knew all of that going into this book, but what I learned about him here was that this man knows how to be swoon-worthy! I guess I'm not really all that surprised it's just that up until this point, you see him as Gio and B's friend, the priest, the person you go to when you need help or comfort. I loved seeing this whole new side to Carwyn. It made me fall for him even more.

Brigid is introduced to the vampire world at a very young age. The experience was traumatic to say the least. She was brought into Carwyn's clan via his son Ioan. Even though she was human, she was protected under vampire laws since she was part of Carwyn and Ioan's family. Despite the protection and love she received from this new "family", Brigid was scarred severely by her past. She broke my heart and I hurt for her. Brigid is so tough, yet fragile at the same time. She was such an interesting character to discover.

Now, for the love. You know I have to touch on it, because it's what I look forward to most in my books. As I mentioned before, we see a new side to Carwyn that made me a bit drooly. He is shocked by his feelings for Brigid. He's watched her grow up and transform into a beautiful, confident woman. She's looked at him as a crush since she was a teen. Events transpire that bring these two together.
