Book Description

January 1, 1970 Maritime
With the great interest in kayaking today, many paddlers are discovering the beauty and performance of the traditional Inuit skin boats of both Alaska and Greenland. These wood-frame craft offer the satisfaction of building your own boat and the pleasure of paddling a graceful design that reflects the ancient origins of the kayak. Building a Greenland Kayak takes readers step-by-step through the construction process developed by the author and Mystic Seaport boatbuilders. The design is derived directly from surviving Greenland craft, five of which are featured in the appendix. The book is fully illustrated with diagrams and photographs of construction details. Additional chapters describe how to make a Greenland-style paddle and how to outfit the boat, and the appendix lists sources for materials.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time SOF builders- read this one first!, December 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Maritime) (Paperback)
After doing what I thought was exhaustive research on the subject, I started building my skin on frame kayak. I based most of my building on Cunningham's book, Building the Greenland Kayak, an excellent resource. But after struggling and failing with the rib bending step, I decided to purchase the Starr book. After Reading the rib bending section (Mark calls them "frames") I realized that Mark Starr offers some more novice-friendly solutions to skin on frame construction. I immediately went back and read the entire book before proceeding with my project. Would I still recommend the Cunningham book? Most certainly! As a matter of fact I would recommend reading and researching any material available to you before building a Greenland kayak. But I would definately begin my research by reading Mark Starr's book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Building a SOF Kayak, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Maritime) (Paperback)
The book has all of the esential information to build a Skin On Frame Greenland Kayak. While at times the instructions may be vague, the reader is reminded that the Kayak is built to meet the builders specific needs. The book does not provide a detailed set of blue prints, rather instructions that capture the spirit of buiding a craft modeled after Native water craft in the Greenland style. The book is very detailed and provides many insights from the author regarding Greenland style Kayaks.

I would definitely reccomend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Building a Greenland Kayak, December 28, 2007
This review is from: Building a Greenland Kayak (Maritime) (Paperback)
This is a book that de-mitified the contruction of a greenland kayak. It is not a must to look for so many kind of specials and expensive wood.
Este libro desmistifica la contrucción the un kayak tradicional. La madera no tiene que ser tan especial y cara.
