Building the Latino Future: Success Stories for the Next Generation by Frank Carbajal and Humberto Medina is a collection of inspiring stories of profound hispanic figures sharing their experiences of overcoming early on challenges to become leaders in their respected professions. Throughout the success stories are common threads containing elements of six key principles: focus, unity, tenacity, unique ability, resilience, and education. Each chapter takes an aspect of these elements and applies them to the life story of such figures as New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Actor/Activist Edward James Olmos, Founder and CEO of Consore Media Alicia Morga, amongst others. One common theme in many of these stories is the humble upbringings and strong values instilled by the parents of many of these first generation Latino Americans. The story of Martin R. Curiel, Vice President of Marketing for Denali Advisors, LLC. is inspiring as he shares the story of his father driving him to college as a semidiesel collided with their vehicle killing his father. He made the promise to his father, "Father, I will never let you down, I will succeed in college." Curiel earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from California Polytechnic Unviersity and an MBA from Havard School of Business.

Building the Latino Future will inspire readers, whether they are latino or not, to overcome challenges and provide the tools necessary to achieve greatness. Carbajal and Medina do an excellent job of teaching strategies and beliefs utilizing the success stories to make any reader feel empowered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreaming of the Future June 10, 2008
I see this book as a reaffirmation of the American Dream.
Offering a clear model for achievement, Building the Latino Future gives the reader specific, real-world examples of what it takes to be successful. With each personal story you quickly start to learn the characteristics needed to achieve your own goals.
Immigrants, for centuries, have had to overcome certain challenges in order to make a way for themselves. This is why I see Building the Latino Future as such a truly American read.
If you're seeking guidance along your journey to success or if you're a mentor to someone starting their journey, this book is a terrific resource.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, lacks sabor! June 13, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I was hoping for a collection of in depth stories of great Latinos in the US facing obstacles and how they overcame them. What I'm reading is more like a business wikipedia of who's who in Latino business. The book's format is somewhat lacking and is poorly put together; it almost feels like it was published under a tight deadline because of the lack of details in each story. The backdrop of the book is nothing more than a vehicle for business success rather than interpersonal goal setting. One of the more disappointing aspects of the book is the fact that Latinos from other walks of life not including business were left out. The book failed to back up its title in that to build a Latino future, you need variety and details to make the reader a part of each person's story--the overall story that anyone can accomplish anything when hard work, perserverance and support is present.
