A superbly documented work of architectural triumph,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Building a Masterpiece: Milwaukee Art Museum (Hardcover)
In Building A Masterpiece: Milwaukee Art Museum, Franz Schulze (architectural historian, art critic, and professor emeritus at Lake Forest College, Illinois) presents a superbly documented work of architectural triumph as he showcases the world-class Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava which joins the original building by Eero Saarinen. Dramatic photography illustrates and documents the new museum structure and enhance Schulze's informative essay as part of an illustrated retrospective of Calatrava's architectural career. Also included are highlights of the museum's encyclopedic collection with each color plate being accompanied by a brief essay of its own. Building A Masterpiece is a welcome and impressive addition to any professional or academic architectural studies reference collection.

Beautiful museum catalog,
By
This review is from: Building a Masterpiece: Milwaukee Art Museum (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully produced, large-format catalog. There is a chapter about the history of the museum (about 20 pages) and another about the Calatrava addition to the building (also about 20 pages). The remaining 200 or so pages cover highlights of the collection. Each piece highlighted includes a half-page color photograph and a half-page description.
I purchased this book expecting the bulk of it to be about the building itself and the Calatrava addition, so I was surprised at the extent of the collection highlights. The chapter on the addition includes several color photographs of the Milwaukee addition, a couple of drawings, and many black and white images of Calatrava's other works. I am satisfied with that chapter, and the extensive catalog of artwork is truly beautiful.
