Book Description

August 12, 2003
This 8th installment in VP’s popular Building Military Dioramas series features 8 new articles covering the art of making military dioramas & vignettes. Three new articles from the workshops at VP studios include Die Brucke with a simple wooden bridge, Field Repairs (at Lunchtime) featuring a superdetailed Academy M12 Gun Motor Carriage, and Defending the Bridge, demonstrating the massive new bridge system from VP. Greg Cihlar returns with 4 new dioramas: How many? with an attractive RSO/Pak 40, Aftermath of an ambush scene utilizing the VP Pak 43 anti-tank gun, Sniper inflicting casualties on GI’s taking cover behind a Sherman tank, and Got Milk? featuring a BMP-2E in Chechnya. German modeler Robert Doepp recreates a classic Sheperd paine diorama utilizing the 38cm RW 61 on assault mortar Sturmtiger with his Durchbruch (Breakthrough). This latest book again promises to inspire & amaze both novice and expert modelers, as well as non-modelers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good diorama ideas, January 14, 2004
By
This review is from: Building Military Dioramas, Vol. VIII (Paperback)
The book description in the Editorial Review says it all what to expect. The diorama ideas are great and well executed.
From the how-to-build-diorama point of view this book is for experienced modelers only because the how-to is explained in words only and not in pictures, you only see the end result or finished components of the diorama. Novice modelers will have a tough time getting comparable results. The exception is the diorama of Robert Doepp; the Sturmtiger, building and figures are shown pretty much from start to finish. Doepp's work is also featured on missing-lynx.com (gallery -> diorama).
As said in the Editorial: this book is to inspire the modeler. Use parts of the ideas displayed for your own future diorama.

One last remark: the last page of each article was switched with the first page of the next article in my copy. Very sloppy.
Combined with the above, one begins to wonder whether the concept of this series is exhausted. (apparently not because I bought one, but then again I am a bit of a fan of both Verlinden/Cihlar's work).

All in all 2 stars: nice ideas, but the book does not live up to its title and sloppy book binding.
