Book Description

May 4, 2009
Phillip Reed's latest building guide tackles what many regard as the ultimate expression of the ship model maker s art, the Navy Board model. His step-by-step construction of a miniature 1/192 scale model of the Royal George of 1715 demonstrates all the conventions of Navy Board framing and planking. With the aid of nearly 400 photographs, he takes the reader through every building stage. Methods of hull and deck framing, internal and external planking, and the construction of the complex stern are all covered. Reed also shows how to render the multitude of decorative carvings on the figurehead, stern, and broadside. This is the first book in many years to cover the well-known and sought-after early eighteenth-century Navy Board models.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes it look easy (Somewhat), August 15, 2009
This review is from: Building a Miniature Navy Board Model (Hardcover)
This author holds two skills, obviously a magnificent modeller, but he also has the ability to make a navy Board Model achievable. Step by step (great) photos of the building of a navy board model, make his craft look easy, until you realise the tiny scale of the ship the absolute artistry of his engravings and sculpture shows just how good he is. His manner is by no means arrogant, but properly instructional and he does not miss steps. Not that I am anywhere near producing such a model nor investing in such a large amount of tools (yet) this reference will always be in my collection as the first point of call should I finally undertake such an endeavour. Worth buying? Yes. Worth the money too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Admiralty, Model Ship Building, October 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Building a Miniature Navy Board Model (Hardcover)
Beautiful book, having loads photos. For the advanced builder, having a moderate shop and "lots of time" to devote to fine model ship construction. The model ship built is the British Royal George, but onlike most Admiralty at 1:48 scale, this is "tiny" at 1:192 (which equals about 7 inches). This build is followed by a detailed decription of how to make a "Great Looking" display case for the model. English writer, using English construction materials, which may not always be available by that name, in the US.

4.0 out of 5 stars Think About the French, December 28, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Building a Miniature Navy Board Model (Hardcover)
Jean Boudriot has produced quite a number of monographs (published by Ancre Books; google them) that include complete plans (1/48 or 1/4"=1') of the French navy from 1684 to 1825. They include frames, all timbers, decking, planking, cannon, etc. Several are in english (The four volume "74 gun ship" should be read first, since it is the foundaton),but I think the monograph "La Belle 1684" is the easiest. Gerard DeLacroix's site is invaluable. You need Bablefish or Bing to translate, but it is worth it if you want the best.If you can build off a plan, these are for you.
