Editorial Reviews

Review

"Frank Bentley and Edward Barrett's book is easy to read and clearly conveys lessons from a decade of building and teaching mobile experience design. It is full of suggestions and rules of thumb for rapid, successful design, evaluation, and interaction. Recommended for anyone building mobile applications or teaching mobile experience design."--Joseph "Jofish" Kaye, Senior Research Scientist, Nokia Research Center and Consulting; Assistant Professor, Stanford University

" Building Mobile Experiences is a grounded, well-researched, practical guide to application and service design for current and emerging mobile platforms and devices. The text offers a tried and tested toolkit of innovation methods suitable for researchers and practitioners interested in experience and interaction design as well as for technical and business development professionals. Dealing with thorny issues like scalability, instrumentation, ethics, and business relevance, the authors introduce all of the core topics and approaches that are needed for effective and programmatic design of mobile applications and services."--Elizabeth F. Churchill, Executive Vice President, ACM SigCHI

"Frank Bentley and Edward Barrett beautifully assemble the methodologies needed to address the strategic border zone of mobile social media-rich user experiences. They write from deep knowledge of what has been done, what is possible, and what it means to build production apps in the trenches of Motorola and the labs of MIT. Bentley and Barrett delightfully conjure the mobile social media interface ecosystem, from ethnography to sensing modalities to services and applications, emphasizing essential and diverse forms of data. A must read."--Andruid Kerne, Director, The Interface Ecology Lab at Texas A&M University

Frank Bentley is a Principal Research Scientist in the Mobile Sensing and User Behavior Research group at Yahoo! Labs in Sunnyvale, CA with over 12 years of experience in the mobile industry. Frank's work investigates ways in which mobile devices can help strengthen strong-tie social relationships and how people can interact with large personal informatics data sets about their lives. He takes projects from early conceptual studies through to prototyping, field evaluation, and product as a routine process. The book is an approachable introduction, derived from the class Frank Bentley has taught at MIT for more than half a dozen years, and with 100's of MIT students. It provides a useful framework for thinking about, and systematically designing and understanding the design of mobile user experience... an activity all to often pursued based on guesswork or worse misconceptions.

I highly recommend it!

With the rise in mobile phone use, everyone is looking to create the next "big" mobile application. Building Mobile Experiences presents a succinct overview of user-centered design methods for developing engaging mobile services and applications.

This book guides the reader through the entire process of mobile development: ideation, rapid prototyping, interaction design, usability evaluation, field testing and distribution. The book's focus on user-centered design assures that the final product is deeply "rooted in users' behaviors and needs."

Overall, Building Mobile Experiences is extremely easy to read and understand--presenting myriad real-world examples for each method or process described--making it suitable for developers and practitioners alike. To boot, it's also well-researched and comprehensive, making it suitable for use in courses on HCI methods or mobile application design.

Highly recommended if you have any interest in mobile development or user-centered research.

Mobile usability is about so much more than whether the screens make sense and if the navigation works. You need to be able to engage the user within the first minute or so or you have lost them. This book shows you step by step how to incorporate usability into mobile product development. They show how to create paper prototypes to sketch out (and gather feedback on) early product design ideas all the way through to beta testing where you have a small group of people (who are connected via social media) road-test your product which you can monitor via analytics. Of all the major books that have been written on mobile usability in the past year or so, for my money this book is the best, in terms of information and guidance. I agree with the previous reviewers that this is the best book on mobile HCI and hopefully in "v2" they will hire professional graphic designers and photographers who will do justice to the content!

I couldn't imagine that a book about design of mobile experiences could be 99.9% text. Looks like a book edited 30 years ago. I want read it. I wish the ebooks had a return option.
